Almost half the world - over three billion people - live on less than $2.50 a day. Poverty affects so many people, and the aid that we provide is seemingly ineffective. People around the world struggle with supplying basic needs to their families, while others live with rich luxuries and live oblivious to the situation. The issue is ignored and tossed aside, people claiming that there is no way to fix the problem, or that they have tried and gotten no results. Poverty is a very serious issue and should be important to the world, and to people like me, the people who can change the future and help break the poverty cycle, the people who can look after our world only if we are educated on the situation. Why is Poverty so Common?
In an excerpt from a book I found titled “The Forest and The Trees: Sociology as Life, Practice, and Promise” by Allan G. Johnson, he talks about how major social problems are hard, if not impossible to stop. He gives the example of poverty, describing it as the most far-reaching, long-standing cause of chronic suffering. Johnson explains how common poverty is, even in places like the USA, where more than one out of every six people live in poverty or near-poverty. Even in the middle class, many are fearful of falling into poverty.
Another source, an article regarding the causes of poverty explained that some of the major causes of poverty include the inability to invest in property and education, war and violence, limited access to credit, and climate. If our governments were to accommodate the people in need and understand that many of the causes of poverty are out of the control of the person suffering. People in war torn countries cannot help the fact that they are in the position they are in, this is why poverty is so common.
