The version of the anthem a vast majority of the country knows only includes the first official verse. Interestingly enough the official version of the star spangled banner is presented in a very clean cut fashion with an accompanied band and tight beat maintained by a snare drum. The anthem itself was written by Francis Scott Key during the British invasion in the war of 1812. The anthem is a symbol of national pride in fighting for the country. The song its self is presented as a war ballad, and a song that refers to a flag waving on the battlefield as a symbol of freedom and national pride. American sporting events are places where performing the national anthem is a staple moment. From 7th grade football games to the Super Bowl performing the national anthem at a sporting event is an American tradition. In 1990 Roseanne Barr performed what was a less than conventional rendition of the anthem, that involved screeching, laughing and gestures that would be viewed as unconventional at the least by the mainstream. This rendition of the anthem was viewed very poorly in the eyes of most Americans. Many felt the casual nature and lacksidasical attitude Roseanne presented the anthem in was disrespectful and an unjust way to present the national anthem. The anthem made headlines everywhere and even President George H.W Bush went as far as to comment rendering the performance a “disgrace” (cite). Although not a singer, it was still clear Roseanne intentionally, presented the anthem in her own musical alternation; by both speeding up the tempo and belting rather than singing. Roseanne’s version of the anthem carried no melodic structure or tempo that the official version does. The tone of the entire rendition was casual and carried through with the intention of displaying humor. Just as Jimi Hendrix added his musical creativity Roseanne added a touch of her craft (comedy) to her version of the anthem.

The raw excitement for the game, a quintessentially American pastime, gets everyone riled up and screaming as soon as the tune comes to a close. In Schwarz’s article, the most effective of his appeals was when he uses pathos and said “Almost no one seems to be aware that even if the U.S. were a perfect country today, it would be bizarre to expect African-American players to stand for “The Star-Spangled Banner... few people know this because we only ever sing the first verse. But read the end of the third verse and you’ll see why “The Star Spangled Banner” is not just a musical atrocity it’s an intellectual and a moral one, too” (Schwarz 1). To me this is the most effective of the appeals because it gives the reader something to relate to.…

White signifies purity and innocence; red, hardiness and valor; blue, signifies vigilance, perseverance, and justice; and every 5 point white star represents the fifty states this democracy has united under one nation. And in this nation, the people have assembled themselves into one race that works together, fights and shows patriotism for this country they call home. Those who take pride in everything done in this country through patriotism love America. For example, every day for about the first 18 or more years of most American lives are used to look at this nation 's colors painted on a flag in a school classroom to recite the “Pledge of Allegiance.” At such a young age most are taught the significance of saying the pledge.…

They both possess the mood of being somber. The song makes you feel as if there are problems that have been corrected and you finally feel free.
