“The Sniper” and “Lather and Nothing Else” Comparison Essay

“The Sniper” and “Lather and Nothing Else” are completely different stories, but they both have similar elements of conflict. “The Sniper” depicts a republican sniper hiding on a roof in the middle of a bloody civil war. After getting into a conflict with an enemy sniper, the republican eventually comes out on top, before coming to find the body and realizing that the enemy sniper was his brother. “Lather and Nothing Else” is set during a rebellion, where a barber, who is secretly an informer, is giving the anti-revolutionist captain, Torres, a shave. The barber debates whether he should kill Torres or not, and decides against it. At the end, Torres reveals to the barber that he was at the barber shop to see if the barber would kill him or not. …show more content…
The characters in each one face similar challenges, certain characters provoke others, and the characters use some form of deception in order to gain an edge over others. Additionally, the character in both stories also face conflict within their own minds, man versus some aspect of himself conflict. The sniper and the barber both make a decision between two things they care about, they face mental issues relating to the killing of another individual, and they both use their sheer willpower to fight through the toughest of challenges. But the roots of both of these stories are planted within man versus society conflict. The setting of both stories is set during a time of internal conflict within one country, and more importantly, the protagonist of each story plays an important part for his side in the conflict. Finally, each of these stories contain a message that shows the changes of people's roles within a society come a time of conflict. As a matter of fact, many of these points also show comparisons between the sniper and the barber, almost as if they are one in the
