Summary:
In the video, “The Sex Offender Next Door,” focuses on sex offenders and it's effect upon communities. Due to the actions of sex offenders, there are many laws that have been passed in order to notify the community, and restrict sex offenders liberties to encourage good behavior. While sex offenders committing crime compared to other criminal behavior is usually less, communities would request more restrictions on sex offenders and to severely punish them. Even while monitored closely, sex offenders are often unwelcome in the community putting a lot of tension and fear among parents and children. Despite the bad reputation, sex offenders would often want to live a normal life like as any other citizen.
Critique of the video: Overall, this video shared detailed experiences regarding the problems regarding about sex offenders. Throughout the video, shows the process on the laws that restrict the freedoms of sex offenders as well as the implications that impacts the community. According to Gideon and Sung (2011) states, that due to Megan's Law allowed the public access with sex offender records. Due to the passing of sexual offender laws nationwide, this has provided many resources to the community that actually resulted in ostracizing and fearing sex offenders more than it is necessary. This video has shown numerous scenarios where the community have show a disdain for sex offenders. One significant incident was showing interviews from the community and the sex offender's point of view.
