According to the article “Scottsboro Boys, Trial and Defense Campaign”, the Scottsboro Boys trial lasted about 6 years from 1931 - 1937. The Scottsboro Boys were nine young black men, falsely accused of raping two white women on board a train near Scottsboro, Alabama in 1931. On March 25, 1931, nine unemployed young black men illegally riding the rails and looking for work. Then, the Scottsboro deputies take them off the train and held on a minor charge in Scottsboro, Alabama. Then the deputies accused the Scottsboro Boys of raping two white women on the train, and it was a foolish action. Within two weeks, the Scottsboro Boys are convicted and eight of them sentenced to death and the youngest, Leroy Wright, at age thirteen, are sent to life imprisonment. Meanwhile, the American Communist Party is at its highest peak of its organizing focus on the American South against racism and economic exploitation, immediately took the case on and starts a massive civil rights movement. While the American Communist Party is doing its job, the International Labor Defense is there to represent the nine boys. The two groups begin to protest by marching, taking national and international speaking tours, and singing popular songs. When they marched into Washington D.C., they used the sit-in tactics in segregated restaurant. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People joined with the two other groups and formed the Scottsboro Defense Committee. Eventually, one of the white women, Ruby Bates, came forward to tell the truth about what really happened. Ruby Bates address that she and Victoria Price had been pressured to falsely accuse the Scottsboro Boys. Then, Ruby Bates became part of the campaign to save the trial, and almost 20 years before the last defendant was freed from prison. Harper Lee thinks racism should be demolished because that way, everyone can have the same right and opportunities. Harper Lee thinks everyone should be equal. She used Atticus Finch to represent pure justice and against racism. Atticus defends Tom Robinson in the novel. Atticus Finch is a white man, and Tom Robinson is accused of raping a white woman and found guilty because of his race. The people couldn’t find any lawyer when Tom Robinson is convicted in the case except Atticus Finch because most people in Maycomb, Alabama is racist and he would do a good job as a lawyer defending black man.
