People are misinformed about stalking and this is in part due to the myths and dominant perceptions of stalking. Some studies suggested that stalking can be seen as normal masculine behavior, in regards to the hegemonic masculinity ideals of aggression and power over women (Davis & Frieze, 2000; Tjaden & Thoennes, 2000). Since there may be praise for male aggression, men may get away with stalking because it can be seen as natural masculine behavior (Davis & Frieze, 2000). It is also suggested that “stalking-like behavior” may be seen as regular courtship behavior according to some people (Davis & Frieze, 2000). This is troubling because it normalizes stalking as something masculine and minimizes stalking as something relating to regular…

The feminist theory that I’ll be discussing is the feminist institutional theory. According to Ritzer and Stepnisky, the theory states “that gender differences result from the different roles that women and men play within various institutional settings (Ritzer & Stepnisky, 2013). A major difference between men and women is the sexual division of labor in the family and how they are socialized as children and adults. This division of labor between the sexes links women to their roles as mothers, wives, and household workers; and in turn to a lifelong series of experiences and events that are completely different from a man’s life (Ritzer & Stepnisky, 2013).
