Chapter 11: The Interior of the Heart
In this Chapter, Chillingworth has now come to realize Dimmsdale is the father of Pearl through his intution. Its hard to ignore our gut especially when the feelings are so powerful. Our insticts never steer us on the wrong path, even when we can’t explain why. Dimmsdale is the one who cheated and is guilty of stoealing his wife. Chillingworth begans to plot his revenge, in the chapter he states “A more intimate revenge than any mortal had ever wreaked upon an enemy’ ( Hawthore pg. 527). The outer persona that everyone sees and what is really going on with him internally are completely different from one other. This is very relateable because we all battle the same conflict. What we show on the outside is never fully demistrates how we feel on the inside. On the outside, he is this beloved minster that everyone adores and respects. The people put him on this high pedastal and deemed him as the “miracle of holiness” that is essentially the “mouth piece of heaven” because he is so good at bringing people closer to god. Hawthrone even implys that Dimmsdale is such a great minster and his sermans are so empowering because he himself is suffering internally. He has this sensitiviy and compassion within himself that people are drawn to him. But Dimmsdale in realilty hates himself, he even as told the congregation that “He was altogether vile, avile companion of the vilest, the worst of sinners, an abomination, a thing of unimagineable iniquity: and that the only wonder was, that they did not see his wretched body chrievelled” (Hawthorne pg. 529). Dimmsdale implys that he is the worst sinner of them all, but he is so loved and respected that the people cannot believe it, as the reader know that he is very much guilty. Dimmsdale doesn’t know what to believe anymore because he can’t even trust himself. This really takes a toll on his character throught the rest of the
