According to Bill Bright author of an article entitled, “Your 5 Duties As a Christian Citizen” he states five principles that he feels are a believers reasonability to the earthly government they are to: pray, register to vote, become informed, help elect godly people, and to vote.
Praying for the leaders of our country is something that everyone can partake in. Paul writes to Timothy saying, “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people- for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness” (1 Timothy 2: 1-2). Proverbs 29:2 states, “With good men in authority, the people rejoice; but with the wicked in power, they groan” (NIV). What makes a candidate the right one? Well that’s a hard question to answer. A verse from Exodus can help shed some light on this, “But select capable men from all the people- men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain- and appoint them as officials over thousands, hundreds, fifties and tens” (Exodus 18:21) the qualifications that are spoken about are aptitude in business, spiritual maturity, honesty, uprightness, and justice (Bright).
