When I was growing up I never felt afraid to express who I was, and I don’t want my children growing up in fear that they will be judged for what gender they identify with. The Liberal Government has recently announced their plan to pass a bill that will protect transgender Canadians from hate crimes and discrimination. This comes at a time when the transgender community is gradually becoming more accepted within society. Although, there are still special interest groups and people in the country that have strong opinions on how many rights transgender Canadians are entitled to.
Bill C-16, if passed, will make it illegal to deny or prevent someone from getting a job based on their gender identity or expression, as well as discrimination in the workplace. The government will also include gender identity and gender expression into the hate laws section of the Criminal Code. Studies show that transgender people endure harassment and even violence in health care, housing, and social services. The same studies show that 45% of transgender people attempted suicide and that those who experienced physical and sexual assault were at a higher risk. If this bill is passed it will contribute to ending violence and harassment against the transgender community. It could end employment discrimination and raise transgender individuals out of poverty.
