about them. They do not understand the intent of the mission and their leadership cannot give them a valid reason for why they are conducting IED searches a specific way or why they cannot get proper equipment to protect themselves at the traffic control points. This lack of communication creates a very toxic environment and if it is not identified early and provided with a solution, it can lead to very deadly situations happening to soldiers and local civilians they are supposed to be protecting. The concept of Toxic Leadership plays a major role in the development of the situation that occurred in Black Hearts and in other disastrous situations that occur to soldiers while down range. Toxic leaders are defined as leaders who have a charismatic

For me, as I continue to grow as a leader, this book puts forth succinct guidance for leaders in ambiguous environments such as those experienced daily in special operations. While it has not changed my views on ethical behavior in the military, it has reaffirmed them. The largest compliment I could pay Couch would be to provide the aforementioned first-hand experiences supporting his statements in the book. As such I would wholeheartedly endorse Couch’s recommendations as a guidebook for leaders. In conclusion, the last piece of advice would be for junior leaders to maintain the wherewithal to stand up and inform superiors unadulterated truth instead of toeing the party line for what they want to…

Throughout this semester our class has been gathering information about the modern American military conflicts, either through book review or class PowerPoints. This newly gained information of our nation history has helped me create an understanding what leadership actually is and how certain people are able to have it. What helped me gather my view of leadership the most was the five leadership analysis on House to House: An Epic Memoir of War, We were soldiers once… And Young, The Last Stand Of fox company, Company Commander and Four hours in My Lai.…

In Band of Brothers, a dramatized video series that documents the lives of WW2 paratroopers, Captain Sobel one of the series main characters is notorious for bad leadership and demonstrates, in several ways how not to lead others. For instance when he is inspecting his men in formation he is out of the Uniform of the Day and is instead in a flight type suit and jacket and this sends a message to his men that he is either better than them or he doesn’t want to be seen as equal as them. Both very bad things for a leader too not only want to show, but for others to see that certainly stains the appearance of the platoon and company. Another major failure in leadership involving Captain Sobel happens when he is inspecting his men’s racks and personal…

Leaders are made to keep things organized and to prevent things from going crazy. What makes a leader destructive? During a time of war, a plane that carried a large group of well-behaved British boys crashes into an island. The pilot of the plane is killed, but many of the schoolboys survive, where they are alone without any adults to do the work for them. At first, they learn to feed themselves and they get along very well.…

It takes a lot for an average person to swallow their pride and admit when they are wrong, but it garners outstanding respect for those who take responsibility. In the book Extreme Ownership, the authors, Jocko Willink and Leif Babin, express the crucial need for leaders to take ownership in a situation. Extreme Ownership was written with the purpose to recommend and provide detailed examples of successful leadership traits. The book is written from the perspective of two Navy SEALs, who use their leadership examples from combat to drive home the main argument of taking responsibility even in the most adverse of circumstances. I believe this book was written not to make the point that this is how leadership should be, but rather that these…

As leadership becomes an increasingly popular field of study, research continues to support the concept that there are numerous complex factors that play a role in effective leadership. For leadership to be effective, these factors must be aligned in a way that is beneficial for both the leader and followers; in some instances, however, the misalignment of these elements can cause ineffective, or even abusive leadership. Cary Fukunaga’s film Beasts of No Nation, takes the audience on a heart wrenching and disturbing journey as the film follows a battalion of child soldiers in West Africa (Kaufman & Fukunaga, 2015). The film shows the complexities of military leadership as well as how motivation, traits, influence tactics, situational leadership, and charismatic leadership interact to form the leadership process. Beasts of No Nation also gives insight into how leadership can change, and how the change of some factors can cause the leadership process to fall apart.…

Leadership on the line by Ronald A. Heifetz and Marty Linksys is a very timely book. Maggie’s description of her Indian community and the effects of alcohol made me think of many urban communities and the pain that lurks in those communities. The stories she shares about Lois and the heart she had for her community and desire to make it better make you think we need more leaders like that. Lois leadership inspired me because she saw something wrong in her community she believed she could bring change. Lois is a good picture of servanthood she doesn’t sit and think someone should so something…

Toxic leadership is the biggest contributor to low morale, undo stress, and most unfortunately the loss of great soldiers. While many of us have experienced toxic leadership at least once in our careers, undoubtedly we have also known great soldiers that have simply had enough and chosen to separate from the Army because of it. To me this is one of the worst effects that toxic leadership can have because it takes guys with an abundance of experience that could have been excellent Commanders and CSMs, and subsequently removed them from the pool. So why wouldn’t Soldiers just wait it out?…

Often times, leadership in military terms is synonymous with a higher, more philosophical, definition of leadership. Leadership can literally mean assuming authority, or influencing people through trust and loyalty, however, leadership in “The Things They Carried”, a story about an American military detachment in the Vietnam War, assumes a higher meaning. On the surface it may appear as if “The Things They Carried” illustrates a story about hardship and emotional trauma, however, that is not the exhaustive case. “The Things They Carried” details the clashing philosophies between adaption and necessity, and traditional values implanted into the mindsets of the character soldiers as well as the world as a whole during that time period.…

Black Hearts is a narrative written by Jim Fredrick that covers the happenings of, Bravo Company 1-502nd Infantry 101st Airborne Division who were deployed to Iraq in 2005. The failure of their leadership is covered throughout and accounts for mistakes ranging from the general officer all the way to the privates on the ground. At the highest level, LT general Ricardo Sanchez failed to understand and acknowledge the severity and delicacy of the situation that his command group was about to enter into. As soon as they arrived the failures of leadership began to pile up with poor information, planning and time management. In most wartime scenarios units have a six month train up time before entering in and taking over a new AO from another unit.…

Leadership versus followership is a very unique discussion. I say this because a leader cannot exist without a follower and a follower cannot exist without a leader. This makes it a unique relationship. With that being said, there is many traits and characteristics that describe both a leader and a follower. Some traits that a leader must possess are honesty, accountability, delegation skills, emotional stability, communication skills, and confidence among many others.…
