Overall throughout the whole epic poem, Athena is always there is give Odysseus some help and advice when he needs it most. For instance, when Odysseus finally returned home to Ithaca, she changed his appearance to be able to trick the suitors into thinking he was a beggar. By doing this Odysseus was able to kill all of the suitors: so he could finally have his home back. Without this transformation, Odysseus most likely would have been killed: “The time had come: tell him how you together will bring down on the suitors in the town. I shall not be far distance then for I myself desire battle. Saying no more she tipped her golden wand upon the man making his cloak appear pure white, and the knit tunic flesh around him,”(896). This quote shows how Athena changed Odysseus's appearance in order to help him get his home back. This quote also shows how Athena shows her support when Odysseus battled the suitors. She knows that defeating all of those men at once would be very difficult, so Athena decides to back him up in the fight so it is possible for Odysseus to return to his home. Those are a few ways that Athena helps Odysseus on his long and dangerous voyage home. In fact, without the goddesses help Odysseus mostly likely would have never seen the shores of Ithaca
