Reality Shock occurs after the orientation phase and when the new nurse begins to work on her own. The new nurse will become aware that she is on her own and does not have an instructor there to help guide her when encountering problems. A new nurse can help overcome stress by asking themselves two questions: “What must I do to become the kind of nurse I want to be and what must I do so that my nursing contributes to humankind and society?” (Cherry & Jacob, 2014 p.426).

The biggest challenge I have right now as a student nurse is lacking the confidence in my work, so I’m sure that as a new nurse having confidence will be the my biggest challenge. On more than one occasion I have second guessed myself and I was almost always correct the first time. Fortunately our text book states that by evaluating self-esteem, realizing uniqueness, and relying on instinct and past experiences will help a new nurse move forward (Cherry & Jacob, 2014 p. 436).
