A nationalist, anti-Islam, far-right political movement founded in Dresden in 2014. The movement has garnered the support of thousands of German citizens attracted to their xenophobic message. The group has received the strongest support from places where people have hardly any experiences with foreigners. The group claims it is against radicalism and preachers of hate and calls for stricter enforcement of Germany’s laws on asylum and deportation. The group also claims it is concerned by the levels of immigration in Germany, which are at a 20-year high, although, Germany’s birth-rate is also the world’s lowest, which means it’s understandable for their government not to be worried about the growing level of immigration. Angela Merkel, Germany’s current chancellor, has repeatedly criticised their protests, calling them racist and xenophobic, other senior politicians have also condemned their rallies. Counter demonstrations have also surfaced to protest against Pegida. Assembly laws in Germany simply require a registration to be filled out 48 hours prior to the announcement of the open-air protest taking place, for the nature of the event to be declared and for somebody to be named the responsible for the leadership of the event.
