The Role Of Food In The Elizabethan Era

During the Elizabethan Era, They ate three meals a day breakfast, dinner, and supper. Breakfast was normally between 6-7 am. Dinner was eat at midday. Supper was normally between 5-8 pm. The kinds of foods eaten depending on wealth and status. So, if you weren’t rich you will probably not eat like a king or queen. The Kings and Queen indulged in various foods like lamb, sturgeon, and shellfish such as crabs, lobsters, oysters, mollusks, and cockel.

During this time they also ate Fruits and Vegetables. The vegetables that were available to them were: turnips, parsnips, carrots, lettuce, cucumbers, cabbage, onions, leeks, spinach, radishes, garlic, and skirret. Some of the fruits they ate were: apples, pears, plums, cherries, lemons, raspberries, blackberries, melons, and strawberries. Expensive fruits, like peaches, oranges and pomegranates, were eaten only by the rich.

A social class is determined by fame, wealth, skills, and birth. One can change rank through recognition, increase or decrease in wealth, or marriage. The monarch was basically kings and queens, During this era the ruler was Queen Elizabeth I. During this Era, Nobility was the smallest of the social classes, There were only 50 noble families. Nobles are people that own land of property. They held the manor outright or were freeholders. Yeomanry were the middle class they saved enough to live comfortably. Laborers were the poor they worked everyday to make ends
