They’ve accomplished this by coming up with the Golden Shield Project. The Golden Shield Projects, or more commonly known as the Great Firewall, is the center of the government’s online censorship and surveillance effort. This allows them to access every citizen’s computer, cellphone and almost anything electronical. The Great Firewall works by bandwidth throttling, keyword filtering and blocking access to certain cites, such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to name a few. The Chinese government says it blocks certain websites because they are believed to be “dangerous”. The censorship only got tighter after Xi Jinping became president. They have fines, libel lawsuits, arrest, and forced television confessions for those journalists who speak ill about the regime. So basically the government has censored them too. According to CFR, in 2008, Chinese rights activist Liu Xiaobo was sentenced to eleven years in prison for advocating democratic reforms and freedom of speech. This is just one of many examples on how China deals with uncompliant journalists. China also goes as far as to make foreign correspondents to ask permission before publishing an article about the state. According to CFR, 2016 China was ranked last by the Freedom House for having the least amount of freedom, which is really no surprise. The Chines constitution promises the people freedom of speech and press, but the government isn’t too keen on delivering that promise.
