In the story it talks about people outside of the ghetto accidentally driving into the wrong neighborhood, like esperanza's neighborhood, scared because they’re not used to the environment. Esperanza says “Those who don't know any better come into our neighborhood scared. They think we're dangerous. They think we will attack them with shiny knives. They are stupid people who are lost and got here by mistake. But we aren't afraid...All brown all around, we are safe.” Readers can learn, from this, to not stereotype people based on their backgrounds and color of their skin.
In conclusion, although The House on Mango Street has been a banned or challenged book for containing crime, drugs, child abuse, and racial segregation. It is important for the reader because it gives us real life stories we can learn from like stereotyping, it opens the readers eyes to view other cultures and accept them and it also shows readers that no matter where you came from you can be
