June 6th of 1944, better known as D-Day, was not the first time the Allies had planned a major large scale invasion against Nazi Germany. The British were considering the possibility of a major Allied invasion across the English Channel in 1942 as well as later on in 1943. However, none of these operations were ever carried out, specifically due to the fact that the Germans were almost always aware of the Allies’ plans. This was not the case during D-Day, though, because the Germans did not know exactly where the Allies would strike. As a result, Adolf Hitler ordered Erwin Rommel to finish the Atlantic Wall, a 2,400-mile fortification of bunkers, landmines, and beach/water obstacles (Levine 43).…
To end the war between Mexico and the United States the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was established. Article X conducted that any territory that previously belonged to Mexico, now within the limits of the U.S. would be respected as valid, to the same extent of the land grants would be valid. Basically meaning that all land grants that had originally been made by the Mexican government would continue to be valid. It seemed as if the U.S. government could see that these lands that were continuing to be owned by Mexicans could be a better profit for Americans. Adding to this, the U.S. voted to remove Article X, and unjustly decided that they would not inform Mexico, nor the Mexicans that had valid land grants.…
According to Barker and Pohl (2016), the battle for the Alamo took place over 13 days from 23 February 1836 to 6 March 1836. It was one of first battles of the Texas War for Independence. The war transpired from October 1835 to April 1836. During the battle for the Alamo, a small group of Texas defenders led by Colonel James Bowie and Lieutenant Colonel William Travis fought a large contingent of the Mexican Army led by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. Hickman (2015) states that in late autumn of 1835, a small group of Texas rebels surrounded the…
The plan was to sneak up on the British and surprise them. They wouldn’t be aware enough and we would take advantage of this and fire. The British were surprised and they had to surrender. We won that battle and many more after…
In his book, Sleuthing The Alamo, James E. Crisp goes beyond the mere description of the historical events that took place during the Texas Revolution. Crisp’s passion to uncover why certain events of the Texas Revolution were remembered in a specific way, propelled him to closely examine and critically analyze the motive behind a number of writers and historians. It was this determination that forced Crisp to take no for an answer and to “attempt to separate Texas myth from Texas history”. What makes Crisp’s book Sleuthing The Alamo so unique, in contrast with most historical books, is that Crisp involves himself in his text in such a way that it becomes very personal to him. Additionally, Crisp doesn’t conceal his own personal biases as…
The battle at Horseshoe Bend although obscure to most Americans had a great affect the expansion of of America. The Louisiana Purchase of 1808 already showed the greed and appetite for land from white Americans and their need for individual property. However, with all the land the United States received from the purchase they could not move on the land because it was not really theirs as long as the five tribes were on the land.…
The Alamo we all remember learning about it, how the Texans fought for the freedom of Texas, and the quote that lives on today "Remember Alamo" which Sam Houston shouted in remembrance of his lost brothers while he his army chased away Santa Anna and his large army (Remember). I have questions, why should we remember the Alamo? What happened from the time the little church was used to March 6, 1836(?check) when Santa Anna attacked, how did the United States help with battle, was there any hostility between the soldiers and between the native Mexicans and the soldiers in the Alamo…
The Era where the Indians and the white people got along came to a crashing end. After the United States started to push the Indians off their land and force them into a smaller territory which we now call an Indian reservation. The interaction between the Indians and the white people did not have the greatest relationship but they were able to live together. The ways the Indians lived and way the whites lived their lives were different which one of the reason why they didn’t get along. The Battle of Little Bighorn was an important battle, for both the Indians and the United States.…
On June 25th, 1876, Lieutenant Colonel George Custer attacked Sioux forces near Little Bighorn. Even though the Battle of Little Bighorn has been greatly remembered, the conflict was not the only factor in the final outcome of Little Bighorn. The United States government, Sioux tribes, and American citizens all played roles in the story, which all led to the outcome of Little Bighorn. The pivotal moments that led to the outcome of the Battle of Little Bighorn were the signing of the Treaty of Fort Laramie, the gold discovery in the Black Hills, the reunification of the Sioux, and the mistakes of Custer on June 25th, 1876. Many events took place on the way to George Custer’s defeat at Little Bighorn.…
American troops have yet to step foot in battle, but that does not keep the war from stopping. Battle of Jutland took place throughout May and June of 1916. It has become the major naval battle so far throughout the war. Both sides claimed victory over this conflict. Great Britain maintains control over the sea while the Germany continues to sink more and more ships (Hoobler 45).…
Allies used machine guns to diminish the Central Powers ' infantry and forestalled Central Powers from advancing onto new territory. Germany created the Schleiffen plan to attack France in the west and quickly shift focus to attack Russia on the east. This significant battle strategy turned out to be a flop. Germany used its wits and intellect to craft a beneficial strategy which helped gain leverage for the first half of the war. On the contrary, the Allies were resilient and resolute and did not give up against the Central Powers.…
Britain is trying to portray Germany as a nation that wants to invade and rob countries of their freedom when, in reality, Germany just has an economic interest in these countries. Britain, however, did not believe them so they offered military assistance to countries who was not able to defend themselves against Germany. Because these countries did not believe Germany, but instead allied themselves with Britain and their army, “it was not only right but also the duty of the German Reich government to delineate the limits of German interest” (Hitler, 1941, p.…
“The Battle of France is over. I expect the Battle of Britain is about to begin” Winston Churchill. The Battle of Britain was an aerial battle between Great Britain and the Nazi’s, a battle between Churchill and Hitler, and a battle between the Royal Air Force (RAF) and The Luftwaffe. The Battle of Britain had an affect on World War II because of the Airstrikes on British cities, the first uses of the air force, and the Nazi’s first big loss.…
One of the major battles that the Axis could not win was the Battle of Britain. Hitler’s plan to invade the British mainland hinged on Germany first demolishing the Royal Air Force, and winning air superiority over England. With this in mind, the battle for Britain changed into an all-air battle. The German air force, also known as the Luftwaffe consisted of 3,500 planes, however, only 2,600 of the planes were functional, while the Royal Air Force, consisted of 700 fighters, and 400 of the planes were bombers (Blanco 48). Despite the fact that the Royal Air Force were outnumbered all through the fight, they persistently closed the fight with a victory.…
