The contraceptive Plan B pill has been the main source of controversy since the approval of the FDA decision to make it available over the counter with no age restrictions back in 2013. Many women across the United States have to deal with unplanned pregnancies each year, and most deciding whether or not they should continue with the pregnancy or end it. The Food & Drug Administration along with the United States Department of Health authorized a highly ‘morning-after pill or more known to as Plan B. Plan B is available upon without a doctor 's prescription to girls over the age of fifteen. The process of the pill was never easy nor smooth as the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) spent long dreadful years wrangling before upon approval of the pill. It also needed an additional three years to allow Congress to enact the legislative measure to ensure the medication is legit. The pill Plan B can be used safely by young adolescent women without the supervision by a professional practitioner to prescribe or administer the drug. Teen Pregnancy We as a country have the highest rate of pregnancies, abortions, and childbirths among teenagers compared to the other industrialized countries. Also, we spend about an unbelievable 9.4 billion dollars a year on teen pregnancies (National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy). Not only does teen pregnancy causes problems for the child and mother, and taxpayers, but the mother raising the child suffer too. Teens mother are often less likely to complete high school, and at more risk to abuse or neglecting with their children (National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy). Teen pregnancy is a flaw in the United States and is progressively getting worse with each generation to come. Despite trying to educate the young about sex; the rate of teen pregnancies are still at an extremely high rate, the morning-after pill is a good solution for these pregnant teens and for the taxpayers in America. Disadvantages of the Pill One of the major factors to take into consideration when taking the pill is how the human body will be affected afterwards. …show more content…

Another disadvantage of the pill is that in different religions, consuming the Morning-After Pill is contemplated to be abortions, which in most cases are extreme. For women who consume alcohol within a 72-hour time frame and take the pill, or using any type of stimulant or drug usage will greatly effect on how the pill will perform. The Plan B Pill has been one of the most talked about topic within the public with the requests of requesting the age limit to be lowered to the age of fifteen. It took quite an effort to finally make an appeal to the FDA and the request was accepted in 2013 and now has been raising questions in recent political debates and public once again. Advantages of the Pill Nonetheless, whenever looking for an emergency contraception, like the morning-after pill, it is also important to touch on the advantages. After years of battling whether or not if the pill should be sold over-the-counter and regarding to enact the age limit on the product. Many people supported the age limit being lowered because these generations of teenagers are becoming more sexually active and often parents are not acknowledged about it. Without the parents’ consent the child is able to make the purchase of the pill on their own. The Plan B pill prevents women from unplanned pregnancies and is the most recommended form of emergency contraception made by doctors making women feel safe about its usage and effectiveness. Ever since the pill has been approved, a generic brand has created a more affordable pill. Many often think the morning-after pill is sort of a backup plan for a failed contraception. Since the approval of the age limit the pill has been exposed to the media and made headline news in social media.
