In our countries such as North Korea, Saudi Arabia and Iran, the governments have control over all of the media outlets and internet, influencing their citizens to respect and obey their leaders. They imprison and even execute those who harshly speak against them or change the minds of the masses. Their citizens are living in fear of their leaders. They are unable to speak their grievances to their leaders. They are living in isolation and without consciousness of what it is taking place in the world. However, these types of situations doesn’t happen in the United States, thanks to the First Amendment, which states that Congress doesn’t have the power to remove our freedom of speech. “Net Neutrality is the basic principle that prohibits internet service providers like AT&T, Comcast and Verizon from speeding up, slowing down or blocking any content, applications or websites you want to use†(Save the Internet). This means that internet providers can give more speed to big online retailers like Amazon and Walmart, putting start-ups and small companies at a disadvantage. This means that they can block activists groups and individuals from sharing their opinions and informing the public via social media platforms. The governments needs to step in and stop these internet providers from becoming dictators by regulating the services and passing bills to ensure that all contributors to the web are being treated equally.
The government should have some control of the internet to protect the interest of the people. They have to ensure the hackers are not stealing from banks, thus ruining the lives of many. Also, they need to ensure that internet provider don't gain totalitarian power of the internet, controlling what is being shared and giving others more power than the rest.
