The Pros And Cons Of Genetically Modified Animals

Register to read the introduction… In India, “thousands of sheep buffalo, and goats… died after grazing on Bt cotton plants”(GMO Dangers 1). In North America, farmers have reported that after feeding their pigs GM corn, the pigs had low conception rates, became sterile, or had false pregnancies. After eating GM corn, twelve cows died in Germany. Also, “other cows in the herd developed a mysterious illness and had to be killed” (The Good, Bad and Ugly about GMOs 5). Rats fed Bt corn “showed significant changes in their blood cells, livers, and kidneys”(The Good, Bad and Ugly about GMOs 5). Mice that have ingested genetically modified corn and soy have had fewer and smaller offspring and exhibited traces of toxicity in their immune system. The question remains: how will GMO’s affect …show more content…
Genetically modified crops and herbicides used to grow them harm animals and ecosystems. For instance, GMOs reduce “biodiversity, pollute water resources, and are unsustainable” (10 Reasons to Avoid GMOs 2). One example is the 50% population drop of monarch butterflies in the US. Research shows that this is because of the use of the Roundup herbicide. Because of GM crop seeds cross pollination, farmers who choose to grow organic and non-GMO crops “struggle to keep their crops pure” (10 Reasons to Avoid GMOs 1). Money being used on research on genetically modified crops can be much better spent for “more safe, reliable, and appropriate technologies” (10 Reasons to Avoid GMOs …show more content…
A study conducted by the Union of Concerned Scientists concluded that “GMOs do not, on average, increase yields at all” (10 Reasons to Avoid GMOs 2). In fact, they also concluded that “...GMOs have nothing to offer the goals of reducing hunger and poverty, improving nutrition, health and rural livelihoods” (10 Reasons to Avoid GMOs 2). Companies like Monsanto that use GMOs want us to believe that GMOs are safe and part of our future. The position that supports GM crops does not consider the health of consumers in the long-term and how other animals will be affected. For these reasons, I strongly disagree with the use of GMOs. Biotech companies make GMOs seem to be good for us. But when you consider the harmful effects, GMOs definitely do more harm than good. These GMOs affect our health as consumers and they do not only affect humans, but also animals. We, as consumers, are like guinea pigs in a worldwide, dangerous

Although no pathos is involved, this article provides reliable evidence and effectively argues the beneficial qualities of GMOs. The National Academy of Sciences includes strong logical appeals to gain the trust of the reader. “Genetically Engineered Crops: Experiences and Prospects,” is logically organized; the subtitles are all common topics that anti-GMO advocates argue about, and the orderly structure is convenient for the reader. For example, most non-GMO consumers claim that GE crops threaten the environment; however, under the subtitle “Agronomic and Environmental Effects,” Gould et al.…

For years, there has been a serious debate regarding whether genetically modified foods are safe for consumption. Due to this seemingly everlasting controversy came the rise of pro-GMO and anti-GMO groups. To truly understand the severity of the issue, it is important to first understand what exactly a “GMO” is and why it supposedly poses a threat to civilization. A Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) is an organism in which “genes from the DNA of one species are extracted and artificially placed into another plant or animal” (Institute for Responsible Technology). Doing so allows for a crop to grow at a higher yield and lower cost.…

These consequences can include but are not limited to, groundwater contamination, killing of controller species, and creation of new pests. (6) The production and distribution of GM crops with a pesticide gene included inside, like Bt corn, has the potential to decrease and eliminate harmful crop dusting and widespread pesticide use; which will in turn positively affect the…

According to Ruchir Raman in “The impact of Genetically Modified (GM) crops in modern agriculture: A review” (2017), the study that found a decline in Monarch butterfly populations due to GM corn was disproven. It was disproven because of “improper experimental design and validity and soundness of extrapolating laboratory assays to field testing” as many scientists challenged the conclusion and attempted to replicate the study but could not get the same results (201). Nevertheless, the study caught the attention of the media. Finally, the idea that GM crops don’t help food security is false. As Raman puts it, global crop yield will have to increase by 22% to keep up with the population growth over the next thirty years and genetic engineering can help achieve that while reducing the amount of land needed (198).…

Are GMOs safe? When it comes to the topic of the safety behind GMOs, many of us will readily agree that we are uneducated on the risks and benefits they present in our bodies and to the environment. Where this argument usually ends, however, is on the question of the advantages genetically engineering seeds and crops can have during the growing process of the crops and for the environment as well. Whereas some are convinced that this let alone is enough to be pro GMOs, others maintain that GM crops and products should be closely analyzed and examined continuously over time to find accurate data on the long term effects they can have, not only on the environment but on our bodies overall health after years of consumption and exposure to these…

“Recent studies have found that farmers growing genetically engineered crops are using just as many toxic pesticides and herbicides as conventional farmers and in some cases using more”(Miller). In addition, scientists predict that there will be a growth in “ BT- resistant pests will eliminate the effectiveness of a natural pesticide that organic farmers use”(Miller). Scientists have tested GMOs on animals to show the effects of consuming Genetically modified crops. One example is “when female rats were fed GMOs before, and during their pregnancy more than 50% of their offspring died within 3 weeks of birth” (Smith). Finally, many health risks come with dining on these Genetically Modified Organisms.…

Advancement in technology has changed the way of living tremendously in the past couple of decades. Over the recent years, genetically modified organisms have slowly substituted our diets with genetically modified foods. This has harmfully been affecting the society we live in today along with producing unsafe side effects across the world. By consuming these genetically modified foods there are many questions and debates whether or not there is enough evidence to support the fact that GMO’s are truly harmful.…

Even though tests have only really been done to animals and the effects are bad you can only imagine how bad our results will be for humans. Knowing the true results while testing these animals that alone demonstrates why GMO’s can lead to serious health problems. Not only does it affect many bodily parts but it also effects your lifespan. A GM plant could theoretically contain lower nutritional quality that its traditional counterpart by making nutrients unavailable or indigestible to humans.…

GMO’s There are two main reasons why I am against GMO use in crops. The first reason is, farmers have the ability to put whatever they want into their foods. Many GMO’s have the ability to cause damage to the inner body. My second reason is, some of what farmers put into the plants and animals gets washed away. The chemical that gets washed away is a pollutant called glyphosate.…

The use of many GMOs create a hot bed of debate, but the pros of GMOs far outweigh the cons. The struggle for the population control and world hunger are evident and also uncontrollable, as we approach 9 billion people it is eminent that we will run out of needed resources such as food, gas, and space. GMOs have the potential to do multiple things. For those of you that may not know GMOS (or Genetically modified organisms) are organisms that have been created through gene splicing techniques of biotechnology (also called genetic engineering, or GE). They are a safe way to slow down pollution and use less land in crop production. GMOs also provide many health benefits, and could also be a leading cause in ending world hunger. Currently many people are opposing GMOs because GMOs are a relatively young concept, and they believe GMOs only benefit the consumer.…
