Assessing positive psychology Positive psychology refers to the branch of psychology which is concerned with one’s satisfaction of one’s life. It is different from the more scientific branches of psychology because it is not concerned with the pathological aspects of psychology or with mental illness. Rather, positive psychology focuses on how ‘positive’ mental attitudes can lead to more ‘positive’ and fulfilling lives. In short, it is more about personal growth than an actual hard science. However, some attack some forms of positive psychology as pseudo-science, especially those who are connecting positive psychology to ‘new wave’ beliefs and other similar forms of pseudo-science. How can we wake up in the morning in every day of our lives, excited for the things that will happen? Positive psychology recognizes the problem of human motivation and happiness. Just because we are eating three times a day does not mean that can become happy. A lot of people can have a lot of possessions and yet remain unfulfilled. Some people can feel a sense of inadequacy and weakness which can possibly lead to depression or even suicide. Positive psychology encourages people not to depend their happiness on how people see them. Rather, they should assess their lives through their own standards and their own standard of happiness.
Positive psychology encourages people to create sustainable and happiness-driven lives. It discourages people to become addicted to substances and habits which only provide short-term happiness. It also discourages people to become driven by unfriendly competition. People are encouraged to build a solid positive mental outlook towards life.
In short, positive psychology can help lead to a successful life by making the person more aware of his or her choices and beliefs. We are encouraged to look at our situations, strengths and limitations, from a sober and level-headed foundation of happiness. It is less about magical or pseudo-scientific laws but more about recognizing our real situations as human beings in a human
