The novel Roots by Alex Haley tells the story of a young boy named Kairaba “Kunta” Kinte and his family who live in Juffure, a small village in The Gambia, Africa. Kunta has a younger brother named Lamin Kinte and he cares for him, as well as the rest of his family and kafo mates. His village is the type that farms and all of it’s inhabitants are farmers. Often times they don’t have enough food to eat, despite that they’re farmers, due to harsh weather and extreme conditions. Each character had to live difficult lives and went through hardships. Both of these villages are full of crops and everyone there are farmers. Another thing that is similar with these two novels is that they both have characters who support their families the best they can. The time period in both stories are the same as well. Roots is different than Things Fall Apart because the religions in each book are different. Things Fall Apart doesn’t have any slavery in it whereas Roots contains a ton of it. Kunta from Roots only has one kid and one wife while Okonkwo from Things Fall Apart has nine wives with several children. Okonkwo was always angry but Kunta was angry sometimes but also scared.
