The Persuader Leadership Style

A successful leader interacts with people who communicate differently based on learned experiences. Harley-McClaskey (2017b) describes the connection between behavioral style and leadership. Beginning during childhood, an individual learns effective behaviors as he or she acts and receives responses from other people. Each individual demonstrates specific physical and verbal responses that can be categorized by four behavioral styles. A Controller enjoys authority, outcomes, and success. He or she will fight publicly to produce results. A Persuader seeks social approval and appreciation. He or she may practice procrastination or seek attention. A Stabilizer prefers harmony over disagreement and desires assurance. He or she is a steadfast …show more content…
For example, a leader is working with a group of four writers to produce a magazine ad. The Controller wants to tell the other team members what to do and refuses to consider their suggestions. At every meeting, the Stabilizer avoids a challenge by withdrawing when the Controller talks. Whenever the Stabilizer attempts to tell the Controller about a meeting policy requiring everyone’s input, the Controller acts oppositional. The Persuader offers numerous ideas and makes careless choices, which the Analyzer critiques. The Analyzer is consumed with every detail of the image and is determined to produce a perfect ad. If a fight occurs, the leader may make a statement that encourages a growth mindset rather than a fixed mindset (Harley-McClaskey, 2017a). For example, “This is a real challenge, but we have a lot of strengths as a team and we will figure it out” is more positive than “This is a terrible mess! We can’t get along. I guess some of us are just smarter than others.” The group may discuss how different viewpoints support aspects of the organization.
