On a dreary September morning in Gloucester Massachusetts, a crew of diverse, hardened fishermen boarded the sword fishing vessel Andrea Gail. September in the northeast is a favorable time to swordfish and Captain Billy Tyne is eyeing the conditions of one of the most rewarding sword fishing spots of the east, the grand banks. Sword fishing is a multi-million dollar industry in the north east, and for such a poor area like Gloucester, it draws men from all over to participate. With hurricane season at its height, the north east is in the bulls eye for extremely powerful tropical hurricanes coming from the Caribbean. Unfortunately Billy Tyne and the crew of the Andrea Gail, they are unknowingly in the sights of one of the most powerful hurricanes the northeast has ever seen. On October 27th, the Weather Service issued a warning for the possible development of a mega-storm. Billy is pressed for time and makes the decision to head home. He alerts the captain of a sister ship, The Allison, of his decision to head home and is never heard of again.
Throughout the life of the Hurricane Grace (the hundred year storm) the weather service recorded wave heights over a hundred feet, and wind speeds up to 80knots. Even though the Andrea Gail may have tragically disappeared at sea, other horrific accounts of the storms fury have surfaced since its occurrence. Many ocean rescues by the coast guard and the national guard took place during the storm and many ships were badly damaged. Unfortunately the crew of the Andrea Gail did not return home safely. Their souls and stories died alongside one of the most dangerous storms in the history of
