Introduction: The play is set in the small Massachusetts village of Salem early in the year 1692. A group of people who grew dissatisfied in the Church of England were called Puritans. These puritans have worked moral, religious and societal reforms. They highly believed in the black and white lines of good and evil and they populated Salem. In exceedingly pious Puritan New England, a collection of girls fell indisposed. Extraordinary or daunting events were often imputed to the devil or his corps. Reverend Samuel Parris caught the girls while they were dancing. Betty, who happens to be the reverends daughter fall into a coma-like state. Reverend Samuel Parris kneels in prayer at the bed of his daughter in a small upper bedroom of their home, while a crowd congregates outside. Rumors of witchcraft begin to disseminate on the entire town. Parris began questioning Abigail Williams, who is Parris’s niece and at the same time the girls’ ring leader about what really happened. Strongly intelligent, honest man, who can easily identify indiscretion in others and flaunt it, but he questions his own moral will. Because of hi lust for Abigail Williams which led to their affair, he questions whether or not he is a righteous person. Yet his secret affair with Abigail was the only flaw characterized to proctor.
Elizabeth Proctor The wife of a farmer from Salem, john proctor, Elizabeth shares a comparably strict cling to justice and moral principles with her husband john. Being a woman with great confidence and in the capability of a person to retain a sense of righteousness, both internal and external, fathom that her husband was having an affair with Abigail, Elizabeth is chiefly upright but often cold.
