The Other Side Is Not Dumb Analysis

An Analysis: “The “Other Side” Is Not Dumb This article, “The “Other Side” Is Not Dumb”, is about someone giving an opinion and you not arguing or disagreeing. Sometimes you have to hear the other group out, maybe you take their criticism and change the way you do something, you never know they could be helping you. Everyone has different likes and dislikes. Just because you differ things from another does not mean they should be treated different than another. If a friend likes a different musical artist than me we're not going to stop being friends. There are more important things in the world to fight about. Everyone has been rude before, here and there, but it's apart of being human.Nobody will be 100% right about …show more content…
It really broaden my horizon, it made me have a new appreciation for others. Everyone judges people, it's I guess “normal”, it doesn’t mean it's right. Sometimes listening and understand can be the best thing. I have changed my opinion many times after hearing other people’s viewpoint. Sometimes you have to open yourself to others and maybe get a little less ignorant. What I took away from this article is listen and be open minded, it's like trying something new you have to try it before you judge it. As we get older, we are going to listen more, in the beginning it will be a challenge. Listening can turn into learning which turns into curiosity. Something can be uncovered possibly, and something new we’re interested in is discovered. I really thought the game “Controversial Opinion” is brilliant, it gives people a view about what others like or not, and it gives you possibly a sense of something new. I liked how Sean Blanda addressed social media, because millions of people have social media, and that is a huge factor. Sadly, someone's opinion can cause someone’s parents heartbreak, but it can make you a new friend with similar interests. Lastly, another fascinating piece that I thought about the article, was when Sean was talking about we’re not always right. He stated that people live in different places and have different styles as us. Everyone is different, just be you, and try and be a listener, not a follower, or ignorant. It’s just how us “Americans” want to become a dictator for what I can or can’t do. We have to look at life there are times we think our world has ended. Then we see the other side and we actually see it never ends, life is a cycle of good and bad, happy and sad, highs and lows and it always moves

Questioning is risky. It requires both the risk of questioning incorrectly, and the risk of undermining the oft-accepted beliefs of an authority. In the face of loftily written texts by distinguished academics, agreeing with the text at face value seems the easiest option. The fear of overstepping and inaccurately rendering the author’s opinion moot outweighs the reward of carefully finding the flaws in the text and learning more about reading critically. The reader of Stanley Fish’s “There’s No Such Thing as Free Speech, and It’s a Good Thing, Too” may experience a similar feeling.…

The value of such controversial books is illustrated by Stephen Tomczak, where he said, "Students who debate controversial issues in school are more likely to be engaged and active citizens." (Tomczak) The comparison of the students who have read such books to those who did not, successfully juxtaposes the benefits of controversial books. Essentially, it can said that students who read…

Research began as a chore, but over time, the more I researched, the more engrossed I became. Delving through research that corroborated opposing worldviews, I realized that the truth existed on both sides of the topics I was investigating, that the truth didn’t exist in a binary. By forcing me to assess different perspectives, debate had precipitated in me a feeling of confusion towards the complexities of world issues while simultaneously a feeling of empowerment, with debate rounds giving me an outlet by which to discuss these pertinent…

The Likely Cause of Addiction Has Been Discovered, and It Is Not What You Think by Johann Hari illustrates the message that environmental factors are the most influential component of drug addiction, along with chemicals aiding the problem. I absolutely agree with Hari that environmental circumstances, such as social dislocation lead to the usage of drugs. However I believe that chemicals are the most influential factor in starting and continuing the process of (drug) addiction itself, not the environment a person inhabits. The environment someone lives in is one of the most important factors that encourages drug usage. Chemicals cause the compulsive need for and use of a habit-forming substance.…

It also thought me to be a very open minded person, when it came to religious beliefs, politics and different people. As I got older and met different people in college and other towns besides the one I grew up in. I realized that its ok to be different and some people have thought me to be more open about what I truly belief in instead of hiding who I am to fit in. Since then, I have never kept my mouth closed, when I hear someone being racist or ignorant towards any issue that I have knowledge…

“It’s All True from the Right Point of View” Disagreement can be important in making sure that no one particular view dominates a topic, however, especially severe controversy is far more counter productive than useful. I have often witnessed an enormous divide over ideals, such as the rush over elections for presidency, and yet it is not common for people to divide on account of their ideas. Looking back on history there are rallies for guns, gay communities, pro and anti-abortion, gender rights, racial equality, and all number of other controversies dating back through all of human history. The fervor with which we are willing to cling to our personal ideals as a race is remarkable.…

That's pretty much all I had to say about the topic and I hope I got you thinking a little bit differently on what my opinions are and hopefully I’ve helped you understand a different perspective from a totally different person. Maybe you may disagree with me on some parts and if you do I’m glad if you were to point them on on this paper. This essay really did get me thinking more on my opinions in life and I’m actually kind of glad I did it because it made me sit down and actually think about what I believe in and what I support because I really don’t express my opinions in public and usually I keep quiet, unless of course someone is being offensive or racist towards…
