“Where the stories grow on trees” in West Africa is where Ananse, the trickster spider, originates (The Greedy Ananse). Being a trickster does not mean evil, but means chaos. Ananse goes by many different names: Anansi, Anaanu, Anancy, Nanzi and others (Ananse). Each culture has their own version of Ananse, whether it be a spider, coyote, or a bird. According to the textbook Myth and Knowing, trickster myths are the spark of action in any story (pg. 247). Animal tricksters in Africa are described as “hungry for recognition, mentally acute, tight-fisted, ungrateful, greedy, and lazy according to Myth & Knowledge, Why We Tell Stories about Spider (pg. 253). In Africa myths began as oral stories, only being told in person, never written down in …show more content…
Although Ananse tricked everyone to get his way, his persistence is admirable. Some may think it is wrong to trick people into getting what they want, but Ananse used many teachable skills. He discovered something he wanted, and worked in every way he knew possible to gain his want. He did not let the tasks slow him down. He used creative and outside the box thinking and problem solving skills. The god thought she could trick Ananse by giving him tasks that she thought would be unmanageable, but he found a way around it. It is very difficult to trick a trickster. Each of the tasks the sky god gave to Ananse to complete were supposed to impossible. The jaguar, with his piercing teeth, and quick speeds are predators and difficult to catch. Predators hunt for their food. So Ananse would be pray to a jaguar. Pray is a lesser animal to a predator. Ananse used his quick thinking and problem solving skills to trick the jaguar to participate in a game allowing Ananse to tie him up. The jaguar agrees to the game and Ananse has then seized the jaguar. Jaguars live in the rainforest (National Geographic). There are many rainforests in West …show more content…
This task is so challenging because being invisible means you cannot see her. Ananse conveniences the fairy to fight a tar baby. A tar baby is covered in tar. Tar, is a black sticky substance that is used now to build roofs. The more you struggle against tar, the harder it is to be released, if at all. The tar stuck to the fairy, allowing the fairy to be seen, in turn allowing Ananse to apprehend the invisible fairy of the forest (Ananse). Each task of catching these creatures, Ananse had to think outside of the box. He could not just walk up to them and ask them to come with him to the sky god. He had to think of each creature’s size, speed and abilities. He used that information to formulate a plan. He also had to think about his environment. Ananse the spider originated in West Africa. You have to cross the Atlantic Ocean to get to West Africa from the United States. (Insert information about West Africa here).
There are many lessons to be learned of Ananse. Although playing tricks on people to get your way is the wrong thing to do, Ananse never gives up when he has his mind set on something. He pushes his way through the difficult tasks to obtain the knowledge and stories from the sky god. He completed what the sky god thought were impossible tasks. He captured a jaguar, hornets and the invisible fairy of the forest. Ananse worked hard and never gave up and gained all the knowledge

An instant moment of realization can transform the inner soul and take away ones purity and replace it with a sense of quandary and maturity. As life offers more experiences and obstacles, the degree of innocence that is within the body begins to withdraw. Experiences tend to offer knowledge, but may also instill confusion and change. As shown by Antonio, the main character in Bless Me, Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya, the epiphanies that he underwent brought about change and altered his view of the world and his beliefs. At a tender age, the innocence of a child is often preserved and is in its purest form.…

Greed is a concept conceived by man in his attempt to gain more power. Our Greed for power is the main reason we inhabit other lands. These stories have been collected by white immigrant people from native tellers (similar to the Joe Hayes or Joel Chandler Harris situation) or collected by native Africans who have been educated in English by white immigrant audiences. Where do you see the English-speaking, European influences? What instructions would you give to these collectors in order to get accurate stories? This question is similar to the one asked about Joe Hayes, the Anglo who collects Mexican fairy tales. The most obvious English-speaking influence is that the stories were retold in English by storytellers from America and the United Kingdom.…
