In 2014, Kristen Rencher wrote the article “20 Important Benefits of Music in Our Schools.” Students who are involved in the fine arts have better memorization skills than the students are not involved in the fine arts. Since the students have to memorize the music, lyrics, or dialogue, their memorization skills are always working. Rencher said, “Kids who study the arts can learn to think creatively. This kind of education can help them solve problems by thinking outside the box and realizing that there may be more than one right answer” (Rencher 2014). The arts require the students to have fun and be creative, so they usually think of other ways to solve problems. In 2013, the Arts Education Partnership (AEP) published the article “Preparing Students for the Next America: The Benefits of Arts Education.” The fine arts allow the students to be creative, strengthens problem solving abilities, builds communication skills, and increases leadership skills. “Through fine art classes, students improve in their ability to turn barriers into opportunities, overcome difficulty in completing complex tasks, and sustain attention” (AEP 2013). These early articles did not mention anything about how the fine arts impacted social skills, but the recent studies mention social skills. The students are forced to interact and communicate with each other so they can complete their main goal.
