This episode explains the nature of Hae and Adnan’s relationship. Though their relationship was forbidden by their immigrant parents they still dated behind closed doors. They both understood the constraints of their relationship and knew they had to be secret lovers. They were sexually active and both claimed to be in love with one another. Hae would often express how she felt she was pushing Adnan away from his religion but Adnan would disagree saying “I wasn’t that religious.”( https://serialpodcast.org ). Whether or not their parents approved of these two they were always together because they were both in a magnet program at school. In Haes diary she would go on and on about how Adnan was so sweet and she was madly in love with him. She also expressed the first time she fell in love with him, which was at their junior prom. Hae felt she was getting in Adnan’s way and she would often cry on the phone because she missed him so much. Adnan felt he didn’t see her enough so he would often make unexpected visits when Hae would be out with her friends. Because of this the prosecutor tried to paint Adnan as “possessive” and “controlling”, I believe he was just a young man in love. He was obsessed. She was obsessed. Upon hearing Haes diary it was clear to see she was accustomed to their secret relationship, since they both had strict parents. (https://serialpodcast.org/season-one). Even with all of this in mind, the court sees him as the main suspect and is not dissuaded by his normal persona. They pin him as Hae Min Lee’s killer by using the jealous boyfriend stereotype. It is also bad for his case when there are phone records and accounts of him acting strange on the day of her murder. Jay seems to be the only one that has a story that is sound enough to have Adnan as the main suspect.…

Not only that but the only person who claims to have seen him in that time frame “called one of the prosecutors in… the case…and undermined her own statement” proving his actual location was unknown at the time. It is unusual that Adnan would not remember anything about this crucial day because he received a phone call from the police. He says he does “remember that phone call and [he does] remember being high at the time” but continues to deny remembering anything else because the day was “normal”, but, receiving a phone call from the police does not seem very normal and most people would remember the events leading up to it.
