Freezing point is the temperature for a particular compound where the liquid freezes to form a solid (Chemistry Dictionary). If salt is added to water, it freezes at lower temperatures. If there are fewer water molecules, then freezing occurs at a slower rate (Salt and the Freezing Point of Water). Pure water freezes at 0º Celsius, but water that is combined with salt will freeze at a temperature less than 0º Celsius (Oleson, Andrew and Daly, Terik). A solvent is something in which other things can be dissolved (Chemical Dictionary). A solvent is the element that something else is dissolved in (Oleson, Andrew and Daly, Terik). When you add salt to a cup of warm water, the salt disintegrates and the salt water becomes a solution, or a mix of the salt and water. The water is the …show more content…

Molality is defined as moles (mol) solute per kilograms (kg) solvent (Oleson, Andrew and Daly, Terik). Colligative properties are properties of solutions that depend on the number of particles in a volume of solution and not on the mass of the particles (Helmenstine). A colligative property is a property that depends on how many solute particles are in the solvent, not the kind of solute (Oleson, Andrew and Daly, Terik). In chemistry, the colligative properties are factors that determine how the properties of a liquid solution change depending on the concentration of the solute in it. The identity of the solute (s) has no importance in the consideration of colligative properties, and the degree to which their process or change can be observed and measured is affected only by the number of solute particles in the
