In the news in Littleton, Colorado, on April 20, 1999, two students entered Columbine High School armed with weapons. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold entered their own school, killing 23 students and teachers, and wounding 20. The two students were part of a group, who called themselves the trench coat mafia. This group had about a dozen juniors and seniors who were often referred to as the “misfits” of Columbine High School. After the five hour siege, Harris and Klebold killed themselves inside the library of the school (Brooke, James). Then, on May 3, following the tragedy at Columbine High School, there was a service held for those lost on April 20. Many close friends of the students and teachers lost, stood up and told personal stories (Columbine Service). Following the shooting, on May 11, about a month after the Columbine Massacre, Mark Manes was charged with recklessly providing a handgun to a minor. Manes was the 22-year-old who provided Harris and Klebold with the handgun that was used to kill 23 people (Pankratz, Howard). As well as local news, there was eventful national news. On May 3, Oklahoma and Kansas were hit by 74 tornadoes in less than 24 hours. The death toll totaled to 46 people with 800 injured and over 8,000 homes destroyed (May 3, 1999). At the other end of the country, there was more sad news, seven people were killed in a bus crash. May 2, in Artesia, New Mexico a church bus filled with approximately 35 people was involved in a crash with two other vehicles. After the crash, 27 people were injured and sadly seven people were killed, some were children (7 Killed In Church Bus Crash). In happier news, on May 3, in Cape Canaveral, Florida, Gus Grissom’s spacecraft, Liberty Bell 7, was found about three miles deep in the Atlantic Ocean. The spacecraft was lost at sea from 1961 to 1999. Liberty Bell 7 sank 15 minutes after flight, almost drowning Grissom. Luckily Grissom made it out alive with the help of the coast guard. Since the crash, Grissom passed away in 1967, unable to witness the recovery of his spacecraft (Gus Grissom Spacecraft Found Intact). Finally, in international news, on May 2, three United States soldiers were released from captivity in Belgrade, Serbia; they had been held since
