Since 1938, the minimum wage has been raised several times; usually it would occur almost every year, sometimes it would happen three or four years later. But now, it hasn’t changed for the past five years. In 2007, the minimum wage was $5.85; in 2008 it was raised to $6.55, and then again in 2009, it was raised to $7.25. It is now the year 2014, and the minimum wage remains at $7.25 an hour. A full-time worker who is paid the minimum wage would make an annual income of $15,080.…
Baker 1 Chris Baker Debra McDowell English III 12 May 2016 Controversy of Minimum Wage “Most employees are paid more than the basic minimum wage. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), in 2011 94.8 percent of employees who were paid by the hour were paid an hourly wage that was greater than the Federal minimum wage of $7.25” (“Digest 4”). The controversy of minimum wage is rising in the world and the people are arguing to raise it or keep it the same. Many people do not know the bad and good aspects of raising it.…
Minimum Wage Increase = Bad Idea There are many hard working Americans that deserve an increased amount of salary. A raise for a couple of those hard working employees would be justified, they deserve it.…
Minimum wage is a relatively new concept in the labour market. It was created with the idea that minimum wage will be a stepping stone into a better paying job in mind. As the years have gone by, minimum wage jobs have evolved from supporting teenagers and giving them the necessary experience in the work field to supporting families. It’s this change in dynamics that fuels the argument that minimum wage should increase to a living wage. What people fail to realize is that minimum wage exists for a reason and should it be increased; the positive impacts are outweighed by the negative impacts in the economy.…
In the upcoming year of 2017 there has been numerous changes that will take effect immediately. Americans took the challenge of voting for a new President of the United states, and to vote for or against a great deal of propositions. Plenty of voters do not research a proposition but only believe what they read or see on television. The organizers of propositions only focus on making sure that the voter believes and trust what they say. Even though some propositions are an excellent proposal not all of them are a convenient choice.…
The minimum wage in the US is well below that of other advanced countries. The economist estimates that the minimum wage should be about twelve dollars an hour in the US based on our GDP. A higher minimum wage not only increases worker’s income, which is sorely needed to high demand and get the economy going. “Raising the minimum wage to $10.10 would create economic prosperity and put more money into the pockets of hard-working Americans” (“Reasons Raise minimum wage chart”). Raising the minimum wage to ten or more will help the workers to turn around and spend that money, which is a huge boost for the economy.…
Since 1938 the United States government came up with an idea called minimum wage. The reason why minimum wage jobs were made were for people in poverty to get a better job or to go back to school or kids so they could make money for school and other things. So making minimum wage higher to help these people out to get to the next step is what we want to do. In the article “Raising the Minimum Wage: Effects on Family Poverty” by Ronald B. Mincy, states that two men named Edward M. Gramlich and Terrence Kelly proved “that most work low wage workers are not poor.” (18).…
The Minimum Wage Debate: Raise or No Raise? Despite what any one individual or individuals may say, cash does drives everything and everyone. Some, for the most part, are less lucky than others. Few make billions, some make millions, and a modest bunch of individuals are just monetarily stable when all is said and done, however a lion 's share of individuals battle to rake in enough money to keep themselves over the neediness line.…
The minimum wage is a hot button issue in America, especially in California. The minimum wage is the minimum hourly wage an employer can pay an employee for work. Currently, the federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour. A law proposed by Gov. Jerry Brown would increase Californians minimum wage from $10.00 an hour to $15.00 an hour. Many including myself believed that increasing the minimum will hurt workers, business, and overall disrupt the economy.…
Recently there has been a pervasive discussion about wage inequality, particularly raising the minimum wage. Many argue that fifteen dollars per hour or even the Presidents ten dollar ten cent minimum wage is too high with reasons such as small businesses will lose profit and close, people will have no incentive for higher education, and the overall elimination of jobs. Past arguments like these against minimum wage have been recycled since the passing of the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938. Examining historical data on minimum wage increases will illustrate if these criticisms have been accurate. As a matter of fact historical data would be the ideal information to study when trying to prove the accuracy of each criticism, because since the enaction of this law back in 1938 much data has been accumulated.…
However, the opponents of elevating the minimum wage argue that it adversely affects the interest of workers rather than supporting them. It can affect them by their job hunt motivation, the creation of jobs, and the morale of the workers. “Without a minimum wage, low-skilled workers would not know what to expect when they go out job hunting” (ROOT). Sometimes companies avoid hiring new employees due to an unstable work economy accordingly to the article "The Negative Effects of the Minimum Wage" published by the National Center for Policy Analysis (Root). “Employees who are working just above minimum wage may feel it is unfair that minimum wage employees are receiving a raise, especially if no one else is getting a raise”(Root).…
The British Board of Trade defined “sweating” as “conditions of employment characterized by unusually low wage rates, excessive hours of labor, and/or unsanitary workplaces” (Blackburn 2007). The victims were coming forward with consumption, vision issues, heart palpitations, disorders of the spine, and other heart disease. One young woman was reportedly blinded by her work as a dressmaker’s apprentice (Blackburn 2007). It was industries in which “sweating” seemed to be a large problem (like chain making and tailoring) that caused England to enact a minimum wage. Likewise, it was concern about sweatshops in the early 1900s (especially the working conditions afforded to women and children) that was a catalyst for America’s own minimum wage movement (Neumark 2010).…
The issue of minimum wage has been a hotly debated topic among politicians and their constituents. Many argue whether minimum wage exists to help people on poverty or used as a base salary for future positions. This issue has been especially concerning for candidates running for the 2016 presidential election. Despite being a somewhat simple topic, the argument for minimum wage has divided Americans in terms of what to do. In Ari Armstrong’s article, he argues that minimum wage is egregious and will only harm the economy by causing people to have lower motivations and lack of employment.…
Yet the enforcement of the National Minimum Wage (NMW) is a highly controversial topic of conversation today. Field (1984) stated that the NMW was intended to guarantee all workers regardless of their status or personal situation an appropriate wage, in a bid to reduce poverty. Over the past decade’s wages have increased tenfold together with standards of living (Richard et al, 2014). The critical debate is at an all-time high due to the pending NMW rise of April 2016, where the NMW will increase from six pound seventy to seven pounds twenty an hour and become the National living wage.…
