In Act II, Osan and Jihei are visited by Aunt and Magoemon. During their arrival, questions are being asked about the validity of the relationship between Jihei and Koharu. As the tension rises in the house, it reaches a conclusion with Jihei signing an oath stating that he will cut his relations with Koharu. This, however, leaves him in an internal state of distraught causing him to externally weep in front of Osan. This is the first serious repression of love. Jihei signed the oath to stop the conflict between his Aunt, Osan, and Magoemon but at what cost? He vowed to no longer see Koharu and his wife is now aware of his true feelings. Osan responds by stating, “There is no grain of deceit in Koharu. It was I who schemed to end the relations between you.” (Monzaemon 61) The cost of Jihei’s love to Koharu affected Osan enough to try to stop the relationship between them any further. In Act III, to prevent the act of a love suicide Magoemon searches for Jihei. He brings one of the last people that will be affected by Jihei’s actions, his son. Magoemon states, “Still if the worst the boy experiences is the cold I won’t complain. I’m afraid that Jihei may cause him much greater pain. The scoundrel!” (Monzaemon 67) This is the final act of repression, Jihei knows that Magoemon is there but will not show himself. Although we do not know what happens to the children of Jihei and Osan, I assume all is not well. Their mother has been taken away from them and their father will no longer be on Earth.
