In order for the lottery to begin, they create a list of all the families and households in the village. Suddenly Tessie Hutchinson joins the mob at the last minute because she had forgot the lottery was today. While people comment on her late arrival Summers asks if anyone is absent, and finds out that Dunbar isn’t there so Mrs. Dunbar pops up and claims that she will pick a paper in his place since she doesn’t have a son who’s old enough to do it for her. After Mr. Summers makes sure that Old Man Warner is there too and then reminds everyone about the lottery’s rules. No one is allowed to look at the paper until everyone has finished drawing. At some point during the lottery Mr. Adams mentioned to Old Man Warner that people in the north village might stop the lottery, and Old Man Warner talks with sarcasm for the younger generations. He says that giving up the lottery could lead to a return to living in caves and it can only bring trouble.
