It symbolises these different truths through the use of a metaphor. The metaphor in this is verse is the use of the word shepherd as it provides us with the image of the Lord acting to his people as if he were a shepherd. Another verse in the psalm is “He guides me along the right paths for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me” this verse’s truth helps to state the previous verses message, which is that God will act like a shepherd and care for us. This is summarised through the line “I fear no evil, for you are with me”, meaning that much like a shepherd God will be protecting his flock (us) from evil. Another time a metaphor is used to uncover a deeper meaning in the psalm is in the verse “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. It’s figurative meaning is that when we die we will not die, however we will live an eternal life in Heaven with God. This truth is further backed up with the line at the start of the verse “Surely your goodness and love will follow me, all the days of my life”. This helps to explain the metaphor meaning that if throughout your life you are a follower of God, God will be good to you and grant you eternal life with him in Heaven.
