On the night of the bombing Liesel was down in the basement, she was dreaming of her brother getting off of the train and coming with her to the new home. She imagined that he would love Hans very much; he would love Rosa but, he would be afraid of her beatings. He would try to squeeze the juice out of Rudy's hair and she believes that he would have gotten along just fine with Max.
Liesel hands were tightly griped around her journal when the first bomb hit Himmel street; the first to go was Pfiffikus, I swear I could hear his soul whistling and swearing when I picked him up. Next up was Rudy’s house, his mother had been crying and dreaming of her husband, all of the smaller Steiners were all in one bed and I picked them up in one fell swoop. However when I was carrying their souls, I noticed that one boy with lemon colored hair was not there.

When Liesel turned around, she saw the bodies of Rosa and Hans, she ran to them with Rudy not far behind. “Mama, wake up” she said as she hugged the body, “Mama, I swear if you wake up I will eat your pea soup and not complain for the rest of my life” she whispered as Rudy put his hand on her shoulder. Next Liesel got up and looked at her father for a long time; she looked at his silver eyes, looked at his cheerful smile, and imagined him sitting at the dinner table playing his accordion for her. Then after the song had finished, she walked over, knelt down and hugged him; no words needed to be said, she knew that he was dead, but that she would always remember him in her heart. When she got up, she saw that Rudy was not by her side, she looked around for him and saw him standing above his family. She began to walk over and when she got close she noticed that he was crying. She tried to comfort him by hugging him, but he would not stop; so she used her greatest power, her words to calm him
