The Last King: Film Analysis

Improved Essays
The film updates the story with twentieth-century protagonists challenging neo-colonialism. By casting an American Black actor as Idi Amin, the last King raises unsettling issues about Black identity, Afro-Diasporic sentiment, and racial ventriloquism that harks back to Hollywood’s days of Blackface minstrelsy. Racism in Western popular culture has not been uncontested, and in recent years well organized and successful protests have risen up in various forms against corporations, athletic organizations, and other purveyors of racialized popular media, however, for as many successful protests, decades long battles continue today to end the dehumanizing portrayals of marginalized groups in the United States. People begin by focusing on some recent

Ender’s Game Adaptation Movie Review Gavin Hood’s Adaptation of Orson Scott Card’s Ender’s Game is an adventurous thrill ride. Ender Wiggin played by Asa Butterfield, is a third that was not really appreciated for being the third child in his family, a third that ended up being a successful recruit for the Battle School, where Ender is being pushed to his breaking point with all of the lies they are feeding him. It seems this movie took a lot of time and effort to create, with all of the scenes and technology upgrades. This movie is a good adaptation to the book because it brings all of the action moments in the book to the screen.…

The Triumph of the Will, a documentary from 1935 set in Germany, revolutionized cinema when Leni Riefenstahl captured and exalted the fearless Fuhrer, Adolf Hitler and his infamous Nazi party. The film uses powerful imagery of Hitler himself and adoring crowds to emphasize his deity like leadership and the people’s love for him. In a time of insane rule, Riefenstahl’s picture was the propaganda for the Nazis that pushed its ideals through techniques that gave them false hope for the future of Germany in a ruthless and fascist regime. I will endeavor to investigate what techniques such as mise en scène and sound Riefenstahl uses to capitalize on the pathos of the viewer to follow the Nazi regime and their cause. Nazi Germany in 1935 was under the influence of the authoritarian ruler Adolf Hitler.…

The golden legacy of Hollywood birthed such a strong approach to narrative and visual storytelling that it went on to become one of the most dominant styles of filmmaking worldwide. Hollywood’s foundation, however, was contaminated with a strain of racism from the beginning with one of its initial major films, D.W. Griffith’s The Birth of a Nation. With the discriminatory portrayal of African Americans, this Hollywood product would become a significant influence of discussion and mindset for films, and audiences alike, for years to come. The new film, The Birth of a Nation(2016) by Nate Parker, and the portrayal of the Nat Turner rebellion seems to be the latest in a long line of films endeavoring to correct the legacy of racist black American portrayals in Hollywood films that originated from the 1915 film of the same name. In regards to the racist legacy of the 1915…

A man’s hope for a change doesn’t grow weary: a change never comes about without a fight, a fight that most times involves violence, either a direct or an indirect violence. One such man, a pastor, a leader of the southern Christian leadership conference, and an author Martin Luther King Jr , wrote “Letter from Birmingham Jail,” written on April 12, 1963 in the Birmingham jail. He claim against the injustice towards the black community in the United States, especially in the southern part and sets up an elite case for equality for all races using biblical, philosophical, and political references. King uses emotional appeals, ethical appeals, and logical appeals to persuade his hostile ministers from Birmingham throughout his letter, which is effective because it 's convincing to his comrades and the United States as a whole.…

Even though Wes Anderson's film The Royal Tenenbaums contains both diegetic and non-diegetic music, non-diegetic music connects the characters to the scene because provides the viewers to feel emotions when dialogue is not present and a better understanding of each character. First, The Royal Tenenbaums non-diegetic music connects the characters to the scene. For example, the clip where Richie Tenenbaum (Luke Wilson) is attempting suicide the non-diegetic music in the background soundtrack is “Needle in the Hay” by Elliot Smith. This musical score’s tone sounds grim and defeated just as Richie may feel as he is trying to commit suicide. Which intensifies the dramatic event as Richie cuts his beard and as his experiences flashbacks to his captive pet hawk, Mordicai, his father Royal Tenenbaum (Gene Hackman), and of his adoptive sister, Margot Tenenbaum (Gwyneth Paltrow), who is the love of his life whom he feels that he can never be with her.…

The film Hearts and Minds is a documentary made by Peter Davis in 1974 to portray America’s unethical involvement in Vietnam and examine the opinions of many by showing interviews and vivid footages. The film focuses more on those who were against the war than those who supported it. For the U.S. all that mattered was the victory. However, those who were opposed to the war felt that there was no right or reasonable justification for their actions. The real issue illustrated by the film was whether the U.S. wanted to protect the country from communism or to manifest its greatest power in the world by winning another war.…

The Hound of the Baskervilles 2002 Film Adaptation: A Crime or Sublime? There have been a multitude of films made into novels because of their lasting impression on society as a whole, especially on young and mature audiences. The extraordinary list of novels remade into movies contains critically-acclaimed plots, such as The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, part of The Hunger Games series; the Sea of Monsters, part of the Percy Jackson series; and it would be daft not to mention Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, part of the Harry Potter series; all of these films have been as popular as their counterparts (“Books made into movies”). As much success as those remakes have had, one notable film adaptation of a novel has flown under the radar and undoubtedly deserves attention,…

Why is it important to document hidden histories? Before viewing Slavery by Another Name (2012), I was not fully aware of the atrocities committed against African Americans after slavery had been abolished. I knew that newly freed slaves had a hard time adjusting to freedom, but I never fathomed the oppression and torment they were subjected to as free Americans. My history classes throughout my education never included information regarding involuntary servitude and laws that were created to deliberately re-enslave African Americans and prevent them from having mobility.…

"Wanted" is basically from a comic book that has limited series written by Mark Miller and J.G Jones, it is about an amoral protagonist (Wesley Gibson) who is discovered as the heir of super assassin. Russian director, Timur Bekmambetov, he is the cream of the crop, he turns this comic into a movie that make the viewers not sit still and make their adrenaline and cortisone levels spike with the actions. Bekmambetov used the similar style of shots and angles with his previous movie, Night watch. It's more to wide angle (long shot), so we can see the terrifying background like one of the scenes in the torture room, where Wes has been beaten up by the butcher. Not even that, there are many special effects that Bekmambetov applies in this movie, like slow-motion with sound effects that certainly provides that "ouch" reaction from audiences.…

The medium of film can be a very powerful and a profound way to captivate audience and immerse them in the experiences of the characters in the film to make them feel as if they themselves are there with them. Horror movies in general are almost always filled with special effects and props to improve the experience of the audience and leave them in anticipation with what’s to come. In the original The Evil Dead directed by Sam Raimi released in 1981 uses a lot of conventional methods of filmmaking by props and practical effects, while the remake Evil Dead directed by Fede Alverez released in 2013 is in some ways different than its original because of the uses of modern technology to help enhance the effects of horror and torture and hopefully enhance the audiences experience in the film. In both film they are scene-by-scene similarities in both movies and are essentially the same movie for a different generation and audience. However, even though both movies are similar, the use of technology and filming techniques in modern horror movies are not as effective…

Film, as a product of patriarchal ideology, reflects a stereotype of women’s unfairness in reflecting women’s lives. Therefore, in the face of the oppression of male hegemonies film work, feminist films are intended to interpret women’s issue from a feminist point of view to explore women’s activities and women’s theme. However, there are stereotypes of female characters in traditional films. The image of women in traditional films often appears to be over-reliance on male and the role of women is limited to the unselfish dedication of wife and the perfect mother. Moreover, women’s body shape is encoded into a strong visual element, so women must be sexy body, dress, and behavior in the male hegemony film.…
