During this whole novel Amir is chasing after the idea of getting some sort of salvation to make himself feel better because of what he did to Hassan growing up and how he deals with the guilt of that his whole life. Growing up and living in Afghanistan reflects how this theme is and affects more than just young people like Amir and Hassan. People as a whole are constantly messing up in life and then are finding ways to redeem themselves because of what they did. Growing up in a place ruled by fear will make people do crazy things that they will regret later in life. People overcome this by either finding a way to make up for their mess ups and sins or just accepting them and what they have become. To most people accepting these sins is too difficult and to others they envy how someone can be at peace with themselves after this. As Khaled Hosseini describes in the novel, Amir is one of those people who envies those who can be at peace. In Afghanistan the mood is very sober and depressing. This is because Afghanistan is described as a place that has “suffered greater destruction and physical desolation than any other country” (Akhtar 55), and depression and fear go right along with that definition. Living in a place filled with people screaming at everyone will definitely have a different mood than one without that. While living under the rein of the Taliban, sadly this is what is happening 24-7 in Afghanistan. The people in Afghanistan live in fear during this time and the fear grows as the time goes on. Once Amir and his father flee to America the mood of this novel changes again. It turns into a more hopeful and joyous mood. Amir falls in love and he and his father grow a lot closer than what they were in Afghanistan. The mood stays happy while this is going on, but then slowly decreases as time goes on. Amir’s father grows very ill with cancer and is expected to pass soon changing the mood of this novel once again. In America the mood goes from happy, for example when Amir’s book hits the top sellers list, to heartbreaking, when his father passes, really quickly. Amir goes back to Afghanistan and the mood has grown to a very fearful depressing feeling, due to the overwhelming rule of the Taliban.
