In the beginning of the book Pi describes pieces of his childhood and how he got involved in zoology.Early in the novel he describes the beauty and his admiration for the zoo in such detail which automatically captures the readers attention.He describes the zoo as a “paradise on earth.” It is almost as if Yann Martel wanted the reader to experience the beauty Pi sees.It takes you deeper into the story and makes you understand why zoology is so prominent in the novel.

Pi practised three different tipes of religion namely Christianity,Hinduism and Buddhism. This confused the reader but Yann Martel uses this confusion in such an interesting way.Early in the novel Pi speaks about animal freedom and what his views was.He used the freedom of animals as a methaphor for peoples religious views.”I know zoos are no longer in people’s good graces.Religion faces the same problem.”What this means is that people who choose not to believe in faith think that they have the ability to exclude them from any religion but the truth is that they do not allow themselves to take a risk or take a leap.
Nearing the end of the novel Pi turns to the only salvation he seems to have left,his religion and faith in God.”The lower you are,the higher your mind will want to soar.”(Chapter 93,283)Yann Martel keeps on referring to faith even near the end of the book and it seems that Pi focuses more on Christianity and less on the other two religions he
