Personal Narrative: The Mindless Autopilot

Have you ever felt like you wake up, get ready, maybe get the kids ready, head off to work or school, take the old same route to work every day, get off work, go to the gym, go cook dinner, watch some TV, get ready for bed, then go to bed and do that same day all over again. If this sounds pretty familiar to you; then it might be wise to go back and reread the mindless autopilot rerun of a life that you may be living. We usually don’t open our eyes to see what is going on around us while once we get stuck on autopilot. We don’t really pay attention to small details of what is around as us while we drive to work. This probably isn’t the happy life we dreamt about growing as little kids. However, we could drive …show more content…
If you are anything like me then probably have some drawn up conclusion that it’s something that it involves doing yoga while saying “om” in a dark room in total silence. I found that during my recent life-changing intervention, mindfulness can be something as simple as going to the park to read and awaken my senses to live in the moment, enjoy the contrasting colors of the flowers, the smell of spring allergies in the air, the relaxing sound of the wind whistling across the tree branches, or the soft, moist, and cool grass left over from the morning dew. This is the core idea behind mindfulness meditation, and no we don’t have to be in nature to experience this. A person can go walk around Manhattan and experience mindfulness. The purpose is to live in the moment and experience everything good, bad, or neutral at that very moment, and not be preoccupied with what has happened or what might happen. Mindfulness based meditation is the key that unlocks the door to well-being. Once through the door there is a path that leads to increased happiness by first physically altering the structure of your brain, which leads to relief from biological medical conditions, sociological conditions, and psychological conditions.
