This essay I will defining what a team is, then look at the structure within a kitchen environment followed by looking at the importance of teamwork within a kitchen environment, which will include explanations of characteristics and concepts that are required in order to achieve teamwork within a kitchen environment, finishing with few examples of when teamwork was successful within the kitchen.

The Oxford Dictionary has various definitions as to what a team is, in the context for this assignment the meaning of team is “two or more people working together” (Team, 2015). Within the kitchen environment there is generally a hierarchy structure, within and kitchen there is always one constant denominator that remains the same and that is that

In order to accomplish and maintain teamwork within a kitchen environment, there are a few characteristics and concepts that must be achieved. These characteristics are traits such as leadership, having good communication, having good organisational skills (Burgin, 2015), problem solving skills, (Administration, 2013), also to all have a common goal (Smith, n.d.) and finally the ability to have fun.

Within the team, whether it is acknowledged or not there is a leader present. This person is normally the one that ensures the work gets done. This leader generally has more experience than other team members there for the can provide guidance when required. They may also be the person that you turn to when a problem arises. The leader is generally a more senior person within the group (Burgin, 2015).

The importance of communication of in the kitchen is the most important characteristics when it comes to teamwork. Members within the kitchen team needs to be competent in communication with the rest of the team otherwise the whole team will fail.

In the kitchen there may be many different levels of skill set; this is when we have collaboration. This ensures that everybody within the team is involved with the task at hand and that we have 100% effectiveness in the kitchen (Burgin,

Which in the kitchen you need to keep your teammate in good spirits when it comes to work otherwise the end product may not be to a high quality.

An example of when teamwork was affective within the kitchen environment is at the end of a practical lesson when everybody at a sink helps one another with there dirty utensils. Usually there is one person washing, a few people drying and a few people putting the utensils away in their correct place. With everyone having various different jobs with in a small group it makes a job that can seem lengthy if we were to do it individually into a quick and effortless job.

Another example of when teamwork has been affective is at the beginning of the practical lessons when everyone is doing there mise en place. Mise en place is the French term which means to prepare (mise en place, n.d.), at the beginning of each lesson each student is required to do their mise en place at their work stations. If a student were to be running late to class, their partner for the day would step in and help them. Whether it be getting there partners knife box out or there chopping board, it is a good display of
