The United States Economy experienced a recession starting in December 2007 and ending in June 2009 as reported by the National Bureau of Economic Research. (http://www.bls.gov/spotlight/2012/recession/pdf/recession_bls_spotlight.pdf) The employment market was directly impacted as evidenced by the growth in unemployment rate. During this period employer reduced staffing to cut costs and protect profit margins. In do so, employers combined approximately 2-3 worker’s positions into one shifting the required skills and values into one encompassing position.
The skills and values that prospect job candidates needed to possess had changed significantly causing many in the workforce to be unemployable. The economic downturn combined with technological

Teamwork in the workplace is the result workers come to when they combine their individual skills in pursuit of a goal. The ability to work effectively in a team is a skill that correlates well with small businesses and team orientated jobs. With today’s job market becoming increasingly competitive, job seekers need some extra skills to separate them from the crowd. One highly valued skill is professionalism regardless of the job or industry whether it be fast food or an office job having this skill separate’s a person from your crowd. Employers desire new employees to be responsible, ethical, possess problem- solving skills and to communicate effectively. Professionalism is the act of conducting oneself with integrity, accountability, and excellence. To succeed and advance you should do more than just wear the appropriate apparel, you need to demonstrate professionalism. Below is a short list of skills related to professionalism. o Taking initiative o Accepting responsibility o Reliability o Self-motivated and self-directed o 9. Honesty and Integrity o Honesty and integrity are the skills of having strong moral principles, regarded as truthfulness or accuracy in one’s actions. Honesty implies to refuse to lie, steal, or deceive in any way. Integrity includes selecting moral or ethical code which should be followed, acting according to this code even when it is difficult or inconvenient to do so.
