There are a few programs required by law. One is social security, another is unemployment insurance, and unpaid and family medical leave. Social Security is a commonly heard of one and it is because it’s extremely important. Social Security is considered the ‘old age’, disabilities, survivor and health insurance program. Therefore, employers can’t adjust benefits to the reason of an employee being black or white, female or male. There are policies that protect age discrimination and disabilities that make sure each employee has an equal opportunity to benefits. While this is true, I chose females and males to focus on because I got fired up while reading the section. As I mentioned before, employers can not adjust benefits due to a person’s gender. The book mentioned that women are expected to live longer then males. Therefore, womens pension benefits were higher. Right as I read this, I thought back to last weeks’ homework. There are issues of women not getting equal pay to men. Women have been getting less. Does this have something to do with why employers do not pay females and males equally? Do they do this because they think females will be more costly in the long run? Just a thought. It strikes me that employers tried to incorporate or adjust benefit plans between males and females because women tend to ‘contribute more’ due to their average lifespan being larger. The Supreme Court ruled this requirement to be illegal. That’s right, the average of a women’s lifespan impacted employers enough to attempt to make a difference in benefits plans. Yet, women are still being jipped and paid lower than men, while doing the same job. This is unequal, and unfair. So while it’s made sure that male and females have equal opportunity to benefits, it remains ‘fair’ for employers to not pay females and males doing the same job
