As Halloween is approaching it has brought up discussions on whether MISD will be celebrating not just Halloween, but all the holidays that fall during the school year. If we celebrate one we would have to celebrate all so students of different background won’t feel excluded the holidays they celebrate. We live in a very diverse society in which people have many different beliefs and backgrounds. We want all of our students and parents at MISD to feel equal treatment between all of the students.

So when considering the right way to handle the issue there are many things to consider like the time it would take out of class time, and how it can make a financial burden on parents to provide what will be needed for celebrations. Celebrating

There are about 100 or more holidays that fall in a school year that would need to be recognized in order to fit the needs of the diversity in MISD. Imagine having to celebrate all of the holidays that fall in a school year. What time would be left to teach the students the curriculum. Students would fall behind because schools would be to busy planning for celebrations. “ Tone down holiday celebrations was one of wasting allotted teaching time. There isn 't time enough in the day to "celebrate every holiday, We have to think about our purpose. Are we about teaching reading, writing and math or for parties or fundraising during the day?” ( Smyth). Money would be another big part of it as well, we would have to ask parents to buy or pitch in for certain things and many parents do not want to fit that into their budget. It may cause financial problems if one cannot afford to contribute. Many people are for the celebrations of holidays, but we must come to an understanding that there is not enough in a school year to schedule in all of the celebrations in one school year while trying to maintain our purpose which is to keep our students …show more content…
We want to our students to focus solely on the purpose of school which is to be educated. In order to create an environment in which students, parents, and staff feel equal, I have made my choice based upon the factor that could lead to more issues about how celebrations should be. Again, we have to remember that holiday celebrations are very time taking and we do not have a lot of time in one school year. Thank you parents, students, and staff I hope we can be understanding of the choice that was

Over the last few weeks as we have been discussing different research topics, we have covered ideas ranging from technology to government. So many different issues went through my mind, but only one stood out above all the rest as one that needs to be discussed more than it already is: education. Education is the system that teaches the people of tomorrow and therefore should not have problems surrounding it. One of the questions that surrounds education is long students should be in school. This issue of a year round school is the topic I have chosen and through some research already I can tell that this will help with future schools in deciding whether to have this school or not.…

The calendar is not a central piece in their lives or their parents’ lives. They are not in contact with adults as much when they do participate in activities because it is child-directed play, and there is no sense of entitlement that develops. Rather it is mistrust and distance from institutions that comes out. Children do not make commands, question authority figures, or direct a situation in any institutional setting or at home. There are clear boundaries that children follow without question.…

Both calendars have their pros and cons when dealing with which ones benefits the students better. Year-round Schooling (2004) maintains that “year-round schools can have more positive effects on students who are deemed at risk for academic problems, such as children from low-income families or other students who might typically be low performers in school (para. 10). Others believe that there has not been enough research done on the subject to prove any of these findings as significant, and there is no credible evidence to support this hypothesis. There are many other people who see the traditional school calendar as something that has worked so far and should not be deviated from. Still, there are a plethora of mixed opinions on whether or not year-round schooling is better than the traditional method.…

The Mill Valley High School Board members should reject the proposed idea of a later school day because it is beneficial to students with after school activities such as sports and jobs. The idea that a later school day is beneficial towards students is preposterous because students with after school activities and jobs would need to be out of school at an earlier hour. Take John Sherwood’s testimony for example. He complains, “But it’s going to make football practice a nightmare. We won’t be able to be dressed and on the field until 4:45, and in October, it starts getting dark by 5:30...…

Most students and parents disagree with this idea, and it comes off as a negative idea. In reality, this is not the case students who attend year round schooling actually have more time for this. They receive all kinds of breaks throughout the year that they could spend time with their friends or family and go on a family vacation at any time throughout the year not just in the summer. Little do we know year-round schooling has many more advantages than disadvantages, actually a lot of good things can come out of this. When schools had just begun, summers were necessary because children needed to help their families by working on the farm, and helping around the house.…

Finding new ways to persuade students to be present to class is vital for the administration. Eliminating one day per week could be enough to motivate the students to attend class more frequently. As a consequence to this solution, the attendance policy would be more strict, fewer days would be allowed to miss, and classes would be longer. Every class Monday-Thursday would be an hour and thirty minutes long, instead of having fifty minute classes on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays and an hour and a half classes on Tuesday and Thursday. Nevertheless, with a four-day school week, students would be able to fit more activities in on their three day break for friends and family, relaxation, and job responsibilities.…
