When deciding what you want to do post high school, you must take a serious look in the mirror and not only evaluate what you are good at, but what you want to do with your life. Some say do what makes you happy. Others say do what will make you the most money. I was lucky enough that my major holds true to both of these ideals. It is a competitive world, especially in a business environment. That sense of being a competitor is one of the driving reasons behind me wanting to attain my MBA and get a business related degree in college. I grew up with my father always telling me to be the best that I possible could, to strive for greatness. I carried this mentality when I was young in sports, and luckily that attitude transitioned into the classroom …show more content…
I can acquire these skills by taking a few specific course at the University of Tampa. PC skills I acquired through the ‘Atomic Learning Program’. As far as system skills go, each company has their own system, but I can become familiar with a few of the basic systems in classes such as Accounting 203. In this class, “Managerial accounting encompasses various systems for calculating the cost of a product or service; tools for the evaluation of business segments; models for making decisions concerning a variety of special decisions; planning and budgeting for operations and capital items; and exposure to ethical norms and dilemmas in the context of accounting and finance. The course includes Excel spreadsheet applications” (“ACC 203 Managerial Accounting,” n.d.). As stated above, this class will give me numerous skills and systems needed in the business world. Accounting in itself is a vital class in the business world, and is needed at the University of Tampa to get a Bachelors in Finance. Business 101 and the lectures associated with the course is the best way to learn how to conduct yourself in a professional setting (“BUS - Business,” n.d.). In the class “students learn about the importance of leadership, ethical behavior and corporate responsibility in becoming successful and sustaining that success” (“BUS - …show more content…
Speaking a second language is by far the greatest skill and employee can bring to the table. “The global business landscape is changing, though. In the not to distant future, fluency in one or more languages will enhance your professional prospects,” Wheatman, n.d.). Unfortunately, due to countless attempts in high school, learning a second language is not for me. I must utilize other skills instead. One of the main “skills” that I believe that employers are looking for is the fact that I am in a fraternity. What most people do not know is the amount of time and energy and the level of dedication it takes to join a fraternity. I compare it with saying that you are an eagle scout, a captain of a sports team, and the president of a charity club on a high school resume. With this in mind, any employer who had participated in greek life can relate to the amount of dedication and hard work it takes to become a member. It also attributes to your ability to work as a team and be a leader in the office. Although this is one of the only activities that I feel is worth mentioning, in an interview setting I could list numerous other activities and involvements around campus that I have and or plan on participating

College Is Not the Key to Success In College is a Waste of Time and Money by Caroline Bird she explains how college was a good place for a few kids that were drawn to their academic work, but now it is stupid for kids to go to college when all they are doing is wasting their time and money. Bird is right, the only reason they go to college is to make their parents happy not for the education part. I have discovered the areas that I have been successful in as well as the many areas that I will need to make improvements. For example, prior to this class I had no knowledge of the X and Y theories. Now I realize that I operated with the mindset of a theory X manager and had the same thought process about all employees collectively, which in return made me less effective and resulted in not reaching maximum production. I currently will apply this knowledge to communicate more effectively with my current managers and to better recognize what theory they most resemble and why they interact with me on the level that they do. This class will also assist me greatly in my future goals to own a business in which I possibly will have to manage multiple people in different departments.…
