Personal Essay: Growing Up In The Classroom

Growing up, I would describe my background being placed in the middle class spectrum. I was born and raised in Miami Beach, Florida. My parents were migrants from Haiti coming from families that were not impoverished but also not well off. My father came here young in the 80s, being able to adjust and learn how to survive and live in this country. Everything that he has and own was built from the ground up. He was not fortunate to have anything passed on as an inheritance. Life as a child was good for me. My father always tried to find ways to make a living. He owned a bus working for one of the city’s transportation services. He then went on to open up his own bakery. All these business were sold by the time I was born. This is when I realized that we were more fortunate than others. Our parents were frugal with their spending so we didn’t get everything we ever wanted but we were able to stay afloat. My father now worked only one job and my mom begin working full time. Another thing that made me aware of class was my parents placing us in a Private institution. Most if not all of my friends in my community and church went to public schools. Not only were we the odd bunch for living in Miami Beach but also for going to a private school. Others around me did not share similar experiences that I did. As an adolescent and as a young adult, I was aware that we were not wealthy or rich but we were well off as ‘middle classers”. In the 2000s, in my teen years, my parents decided to be homeowners and bought a house North of Miami. A few years later, my dad purchased his dream car, a Honda Pilot. I recognized that we were thriving as low income individuals typically find owning a home difficult, if not impossible. Our family vehicle was a recent model and paid off. Also, both my sibling and I were enrolled in a private

When he talked about his family growing up, he also thought they were middle-class. What this shows is that the definition of the middle-class is a large range. Based off this interview, I think the main differences between the lower-middle class and the upper-middle class is the ability to have purchases that luxuries or not necessary such as vacations. As my dad mentioned before, he never felt poor because he had a home, clothes, and food when it was needed. In comparison to my immediate family and my dad’s family, I would say that we both had good social mobility because both families gave their children the opportunities to receive a higher education at a college /…

Coming from my position in life, I often find challenge in analyzing, interpreting, and discussing social class. It weighs on me that I likely bring unfair biases and predispositions to this topic. I am a white, American, educated, athletic male from a family with both parents still together and without many financial troubles. Aside from perhaps a degree from a prestigious University or boat loads of cash, I do not think that I could be more privileged. Although my privilege might sway my ideas on the matter of social class, I am working to remove these biases in order to truly recognize the ways in which the social construct of social class influences the individuals, communities, and institutions that I come in contact with in everyday life.…

When one thinks about themselves, their first instinct is to determine what stereotypes they classify themselves under. Usually they classify themselves as a higher class; for example if they are socially poor, they may say they are middle class. The denial that occurs can now affect their lives here on out. We begin to learn these tactics at an early age without much knowledge of it. Whatever class you fall under one should never let that stereotype define who you are as a person or your character.…

“Wealth moves like a shark over the rock-bound crustaceans of the poor and working classes”. The economic state of our nation thrives off of the positions of the poor working class, middle class, and the wealthy. A cycle takes place in this situation and that is exactly how “the rich get richer. And the poor get poorer”. Would you like to know which class system you fit into?…

Growing up I was always the tallest kid in the class. Whenever class picture day rolled around, I knew that I was in the front of the line because of my height. It was somewhat embarrassing when all the boys were shorter than I, and the girls made me feel bad for how out of place I was. Not only did my height provide social awkwardness, it also administered the constant, never ending struggle of finding garments long enough. Whenever my mom or grandmothers wanted to take me back to school shopping, I made excuses of “I don’t need any more habiliments” or “I do not feel good, all of the sudden…”…

Being in a working middle class family, we never really struggled but we did not have to luxury lifestyle we always dreamed of. My dad always portrayed they messages of “you do not have to work because your parents work, but you are going to work to understand that you have to work hard for your money”. I am very much spoiled but my parents did make me go find job to get the feeling of what most working middle class felt like. Even though I was spoil and often times received what I wanted, the lesson my dad wanted me to learn was that my parents are not going to always be able to spoil me so I need to understand what it felt like to work hard for money I wanted to use for my wants.…

Classism In America, “class can accurately predict chances for both survival and success” (Mantsios, 2013, p. 155). However, the myth of a classless society exists in America (2013), and this myth perpetuates the ideology of the American Dream (Leondar-Wright & Yeskel, 2007). The American Dream is that anyone can attain enough income to own a home and secure a future for their family if they work hard, (2007) sacrifice, and persevere (Mantsios, 2013). Americans “are trained to identify up the class spectrum and fantasize about getting there” (Collins, Yeskel, & United for a Fair Economy and Class Action, 2013, p. 164). Although there is some class fluidity over the lifetime of many individuals, the reality is many Americans work hard and do…

The bright sun hung in the sky, the breeze was blowing gently, the green grass swung lightly, my friends and I ran and laughed on the playground. I always dreamed of this dreamland when I was in junior high school after I fell out with my friends. The image, which also reminds me of the belief that I was so sure of before is not true. When I entered junior high school, I had several friends. At the very start, we discussed our homework or some questions and played together during extracurricular time, we spent a splendid time.…

Good schooling is achievable to any student, however, good schooling is earned not given. Excellent education can be achieved in a variety of ways that an individual can do. Focusing on studies is one way to receive good schooling as asserted by Richard Rodriguez author of A Story Of Schooling. Despite my roommate and other students on my dorm floor tried to befriend me and convince me to calm down about my studies, I chose to always put my studies first regardless. Grades are like a religion to me thus, if I do not receive good grades, I would fail my whole family and not myself.…

My family has bounced around between middle and lower class, but as of the past few years I was convinced our economic status was lower class. After being in this class, and undergoing the activities we have done, I have been more representative of the middle class to my peers. An instance where I really started to see this was when we did the privilege wall during a session. The way this worked was everybody stood in a straight horizontal line to start, and we were then asked a series of questions. These questions represented either privileged or unprivileged aspects of life.…
