Millie Larsen, an 84-year-old causation female, has been admitted into the hospital for a UTI and dehydration. With staying at the hospital for two days, Millie is getting ready for discharge, but before she can be, there are a few things to teach Millie about personal tasks when at home; focusing mostly on good perineal hygiene. The specific strategies that will be used to teach her are: cognitive, affective, and psychomotor. Cognitive teaching deals with the mental processes and intellectual behaviors like thinking, memory, perception, and problem solving to teach. When a patient shows or possesses no motivation, it is almost guaranteed they will not do much to better their health. In general, while the nurse is try to teach, it would be very obvious to find out who does and who does not have motivation. Unfortunately, in some cases lack of motivation is not intentional. Due to Millie’s states of confusion, this may hinder her motivation for compliance of medications and proper hygiene. As she becomes older, the thought process on her condition could be negative and have thoughts like “I am going to die soon anyway,” which may affect her outlook on having motivation to better herself. A patient has to be able to concentrate when being taught about their situation or how to execute new tasks at home. An appropriate learning environment would be somewhere that is quiet, well lit, non-stressful, and private. Not only does the proper learning environment deal with the surroundings or actual place, but it deals with how the nurse is communicating as well. Aspects like good eye contact, being at eye-level with patient, appropriate volume of voice, and speaking at a third grade level so they understand as much as possible are very important.
