The Importance Of Measurement

Improved Essays
One of the most important activities of science is measurement. Measurement is a means of quantifying properties for identification. For example, density is the relationship between the mass and volume of a pure substance. One could determine if a piece of yellow metal is gold by determining its density. Measurement allows scientists to make comparisons. Measurement also provides a means by which scientists can judge the reproducibility of an experimental procedure. However, measurement is not an activity that is restricted to scientists. Every age and every culture in the world has developed a measurement system. Measurement is as old as an ancient Egyptian using a cubit unit to measure the height of a pyramid. It is as new as a programmer …show more content…
A meter is the fundamental unit of length in the SI system, which is equal to 39.37 U.S. inches also, equal to one ten-millionth of the distance from the equator to the pole measured on a meridian through Paris its defined from 1889 to 1960 as the distance between two lines on a platinum-iridium bar from 1960 to 1983 defined as 1,650,763.73 wavelengths of the orange-red radiation of krypton 86 under specified conditions; and now defined as 1/299,792,458 of the distance light travels in a vacuum in one second. The kilogram is the unit of mass it is equal to the mass of the international prototype of the kilogram. The first practical understanding of the metric system came in 1799, during the French Revolution, when the existing system of measure, which had fallen into shame, was temporarily replaced by a decimal system based on the kilogram and the meter. The French revelation invented and led into a lot of developments in everything epically in creating units and measurements this is reflected by the invention of the kilogram and the …show more content…
By nationalizing the measuring units, we are ending the connection between the measuring units and politics as many countries used to use a system related to their king’s hand length and more measurements related to the king’s body by nationalizing and creating a new system or using the SI system we will end all of these problems and make a new understanding of science and make the communication between countries direct with no problems ending most political issues of this topic. On the other hand, it can have a huge effect of the world’s economy due to the understanding that’s present in the world in other words the economy will develop as the trade will become easier and faster. Also, there will be no chance of misunderstanding in trading and all other things. But, it’s very hard to obtain this goal as all buildings, railways and streets are based on the measuring units thus, it will take a lot of time and money to obtain this. On a personal view, it makes the understanding of the world easier since it’s all following the

The Drake Equation Introduction: The Drake Equation is an elaboration of the Principle of Mediocrity; an expression that determines the probability of the discovery of extraterrestrial life within the entirety of the unknown universe. This equation combines the things science knows and does not know to come to the equivalent of N, if N is the number of intelligent species in the universe that are communicating amongst each other right now. The Principle of Mediocrity is essentially the assumption of similarity throughout the universe, pertaining to this solar system being the original copy. It allows for scientists to obtain the physiological position using the knowledge previously discovered about the Milky Way and Earth, and…

In this experiment, students were able to learn about the basic elements of the scientific inquiry which helped students think critically—students also used the scientific method to conduct this experiment. In this experiment, we were given a black bottle and a bag that had items that could be inside the bottle. The independent variable was the contents inside the bag, while the dependent variable was the contents inside the black bottle since that is what we had determine. In order to learn more about the elements of scientific inquiry, we made observations in order to come up with a hypothesis.…

Science, or scientific research, is a collection of data that is recorded and then analyzed to answer a question or prove a theory. Science can be used to explain unknown phenomena or redefine a previous assumption. There are several elements of scientific research. The elements are as follows: public, objective, empirical, systematic, cumulative, predictive, and self-correcting. Together these elements create the guidelines of scientific research.…

Useful Measurements To get a clear picture of Carla’s needs, motivation, and willingness to change; I needed to know more about Carla’s triggers for substance use. During this interview, I administered a short self-reported questionnaire assessment tool called The Inventory of Drug-Taking Situations (IDT-8), this tool is usually the first step as a way to identify trigger situations that would lead a person to use drugs and alcohol. The assessment tool consist of “eight subscales: unpleasant emotions (10 items), physical discomfort (5), pleasant emotions (5), testing personal control (5), urges and temptations (5), conflict with others (10), social pressure to use (5), and pleasant times with others (5)”. Using this tool allows the client…

Lab two explored varies ways to find the density of objects. This lab used displacement , measurement, and the density formula to make observation and collect data about the balloon filled with sublimed dry ice, various water samples, and a golf ball. The ultimate goals of this experiment were to collect the most precise measurements of displacement of the balloon in the tap water, the weight of the three water samples versus the original cylinder, and diameter of the golf ball in order to use the formulas given to correctly calculate the density of the water samples and gold ball. The ultimate goal of the water displacement was to used to pressure formula to calculate the missing variable n in the pressure formula. Lab two's experiment was…

Theory When preforming an experiment using the scientific process one of the most essential components is comparing theory to actual measurements. This relies on the accuracy and uncertainty of the measurement itself. If an actual measurement proves the theory wrong it you must know the uncertainty so you can try to figure out where the error took place. Uncertainty can arise from a few different areas; they are statistical variation, measurement precision, or systematic error. Systematic error is in most cases human error like not measuring the experiment with proper tools or failing to account for external factors before performing the experiment.…

There is considerable research carried out by many theorists over centuries regarding the question as to whether psychology is a science. According to some traditional views of science there is involvement working in a laboratory, conducting experiments, wearing a white coat, safety goggles and looking though microscopes to examine organisms. William Wunt, was one of the first people to recognize experimental psychology noted psychology as a science apart from biology and philosophy. He was the first to ever person to call himself a psychologist and recognized as the father of experimental psychology. In 1879, it was Wundt who founded the first official laboratory for psychological research at the University of Leipzig.…

The scientific method is a procedure that is used by scientists now and in the past, dating back to the seventeenth century. The scientific method consists of observation, measurement, and experiment, and the creation and testing of hypotheses. There are several steps and different components to the scientific method that will (hopefully) answer the scientists’ questions, by the completion of the experiment. There are countless different reasons as to why a scientist would use the scientific method, but one area of research that is focused on is, biology. Biologists seek to find the answers to further and better understand the processes that occur in living systems.…
