Many jobs ask for a specific programming language, certain platform experience or certifications. If you know what area you want to go into then you can decide which area to begin mastering. Not all IT jobs require an additional certification although for the one 's that do you need to be aware and plan accordingly. Jobs like IT Project Manager requires an Industry certification in Six Sigma, PMP, MCTS, MCITP, Network+ , Security+ and CCNA. If you want to become an Information Security Architect you will need a certification in core discipline(s), architectural approach, ISC2, SANS/GIAC, ISACA).
