Homelessness Personal Statement

One important issue that I am interested in is alleviating homelessness within New York City. During my final years as an undergraduate I was introduced to urban studies issues within the classroom context. I was educated about the criminalization of the poor, amongst various topics exploring various degrees of political philosophy addressing reasons for poverty. Given my interest in housing issues in NYC, I was interested in understanding further sub issues within the topic of Housing. These courses began to make sense of what I have seen within my communities, but could not explain. After learning about how poor individuals living on the streets face discouragement from dwelling within particular public spaces by architectural structures that limit them from sitting, lying or resting near particular public facilities, and buildings. This made me more curious about the housing options for low income New Yorkers.

Both sides of the issues include a more liberal approach which addresses the social causes of homelessness as mentioned in the NYT (). The more conservative approach includes removing homeless individuals from city streets , and may include increasing legislation supporting police engagement in eradicating quality of life issues like begging, and sleeping within public areas (). THe liberal approach would include increased outreach by non officers().
Although the addition to the housing stock and rent assistance should help address the issues of obtaining permanent housing for severely low income individuals it is important to have clients directed to needed resources in a more efficient and precise manner. I have listed recommendations
